Let us hope - even if it is against hope - that this election is in fact the first step on a road, however long, to a happier nation, and that the election itself goes off with a minimum of violence.

I couldn't agree more.

Anyone want to bet on how fast this turns into a Bush bashing thread?

At least one more post. If this goes well, then Pres. Bush will be lauded as the man who helped bring Freedom to Iraq..

DM why would even bother with those idiots at al-jazerera. Of course they paint a dim picture but as usual for them a small sample of the overall story. CNN is reporting that the interm Government of Iraq is saying that 72% of registered voters have voted. The problem with aljazeera DM is that they are Sunni's and their reporting has always been slanted towards the Sunni cause in Iraq. One other thing, didn't Iraq boot out al-jazeera - if so they are getting this third hand or making it up.

Look as far as I'm concerned this isn't a triumph for Bush and the US it is major triumph by the Iraqi people - why do we have to trash that.

bbk
I knew that before long somebody would post the obligatory "don't trust Aljazeera" sing-song.

I don't take what Aljazeera says as gospel truth, anymore than I do what CNN says. I will say this - Aljazeera has a real live Iraqi do its reporting on the election, rather than CNN's Christian "Our Woman in Havana" Ammanpour.

Any way you cut it, the people of a country have voted democratically for their government. This is a success. We can and will continue to argue about the way in which the road to elections came about, but the fact that they happened is ultimately a good thing.

60% turn out

real live Iraqi??? mostlikely a Sunni working for that Jordanian terrorists. Look DM this is not a trash Aljazeera, it's just fact - time and time again they support and put a postive spin on Sunni muslim issues while ignoring Shi'ite concerns - they are not welcome in Iran and it's no wonder. As for CNN's reporting, that 72% was a live interview with a Government official.

Anyways your post takes away from the accomplishment of the majority of Iraqs people. I think this is a huge accomplishment considering all the obsticles which they had to overcome. I think thats what we should be supporting.

bbk
They have down graded the vote to 60%. IMHO even if 30% turned out it would be a raging success for the Iraqi. How many North Americans would vote under duress of death by snipers, car bombings etc... these people have spunk. No water and little electricity...but lots of spunk.

Freedom for the Iraqi people - 1, cynics and terrorist *ssholes - 0

My hat off to the courageous Iraqi people who took the first step in taking back control of their country and lives and the US troops who protected them. For all those who thought democracy in Iraq was "dreaming in Technicolor" - you're wrong again - but then you're used to that.

Here is a news source you should be comfortable with: http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2005/01/30/iraq050130.html

You should really change your handle to on the the top.

When a man shoots his hateful neighbour in the head, and his kids who are imprisoned in the basement are set free, and the shooter neighbours all come to the courthouse claiming the bad neighbour deserved to be shot in the head, and just look how better of the kids are, how does the judge rule?

Game set match

Not at all, in fact I'm about have lovely single malt now and celebrate the pre-election election.

I'm sure the point was not lost on you. The war was an illegal invasion of a Sovereign nation. But yes, the Iraqs have just had an election.

500 billion, paid in the form of 200 billion cash down, and 300 billion in future payments is money well spent.

The fact that 110,000 cilvilian lives where lost, and the war will continue after today's party notwithstanding. But let's drop this point shall we, and take a moment off reality to celebrate. Tomorrow will come soon enough.

Positives:

- I suppose by Iraqi standards 25 people killed and 71 wounded would be "keeping violence to a minimum."

- Despite consistent threats, 60% (or so) made it to the polls. Beyond question this is a high turnout, and bodes well for the future of the country.

Negatives:

- 1/4 of the population is on the verge of being disenfranchised. CNN claims that Sunni votes was "higher than expected," but by all accountsthe Sunni vote at levels far, far below that of the Shia. Whether by choice or by coersion (from their own people) remains irrelevant - the problem of a disguntled Sunni majority in the center of Iraq has, if anything, been exacerbated by the election.

- This election remains very much a first step. It did [B}not[/B] elect a government. That will come, supposedly, at the end of this year. The question of the constution which the newly-elected assembly will create remains open - see the next point.

- Of the two parties expected to clean up - and the low Sunni turnout more or less confirms this expectation - one is run by a "moderate" Shia imam, the other by Allawi. We shall see how moderate the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani - who admittedly has openly disagreed with the Iranian model of government - remains once his party starts drafting a constitution.

Voting in the areas where the terrorist have some support would be low, would you want to walk around with a blue finger in one of those areas.

This is good for the people of Iraq, but it is a long way from the end of solving the problems they have.

This election is good news for the people of the US, they deserve to see some good news on TV for a change.

Sounds like the left didn't get the bloodbath they were hoping for.
Let's see, so far,......110,000 Iraqis and counting dead!
This 110,000 figure does not constitute a bloodbath ?!?!?!?!

For one day at least let's put aside all the negatives of the situation in Iraq. If indeed 60% of those registered made it to the polls, than the Iraqi people came through big time. General elections in the states sometimes barely do as well, and last time I voted I don't think anybody had to worry much about being blown up while waiting in line. To attempt to vote under the current conditions took a lot of courage. Hats off.

I know bbk. Was just taking exception at the implication that a bloodbath was hoped for on this election day, while ignoring the fact there is an ongoing continuing bloodbath that started from the beginning of the war and shows little evidence of dropping off at present.
