Getting a Work Visa for the US

How does a Canadian go about applying for a work visa to look for employment in the United States? Is there something under NAFTA about the movement of labour across the US/Canadian border? I've been to a number of US Government websites but, frankly, it's so unbelievably confusing. There are numbers to call as well but the caller has to pay something like $3 a minute to get information.

TERB is chock full of smart folk (and I don't say that lightly). Who can point me in the right direction?

I worked in the U.S. on a NAFTA visa a few years ago. If you qualify, (you need to be in the right occupation, have the right education, have a employment offer, etc.) you just go to the airport two hours before your flight (they refused my request to do it the day before), bring a copy of some documents for them to photocopy (your degree, proof of citizenship, offer of employment, etc.) and when I went $50.00 ($55.00 if you went by car). You can find the specific requirements in the agreement (it is suprisingly easy to read). I also found phoning most of the immigration numbers a waste of time. I found it far more useful to phone immigration at the airport. This was all back in 1998 so some details may have changed.
