Well, if my MLA now comes out against women he's hit the trifecta.

So, after reading this article, and the linked article on the ethnic ads I don't see anything wrong with what he's doing. I don't agree with his opinion, but he certainly has a right to it and as the head of a political party one would think he has the right to set a communication strategy. I would think it smart politics to focus these ads at Liberal ridings (what is the history of the riding term?) where he can generate dissent.

riding - funny you should ask. "Riding" was originally used to designated one of three administrative divisions in Yorkshire. It's an alteration of the Old English "trithing", or "third part". Why exactly this came to be used in Canada I don't know.

Harper can advertise to whomever he likes. I'm just wondering why he thinks his message of intolerance will have special appeal to ethnic voters. I think it buys into the "Oh, these people, they're Old World so they'll swing our way" - which may, in fact, be the case. He isn't, after all, just targeting Liberal ridings - he would have published as many adds in local neighbourhood newspapers English as well.

Thanks for the old world education; I would guess you use it for the same reason you have a Royal Yacht Club (nice place actually in YYZ).

I've made it to your signature line - talk about taking something out of context - I would think with your horror on my 911 post you'd be more sensitive to the context of a quote.

The history of the term riding is that it was long ago discovered that we elect politicians who then ride us until we get smart enough to oust them.

Harper is not a conservative - he is a dangerous reactionary! Hold his toes to the fire as he wants to divide your country into little fiefdoms. This is not about votes but about positioning for the next election with minorities based upon gay bashing. Too blatant to be ignored.
