According to an article in The New Yorker written by none other than Seymore Hersh (a writer who revealed the abuse going on in Abu Ghraib), the US is planning to expand the war to Iran. The aim is to eliminate their ability to produce nuclear weapons. Seymore goes on the claim that US commands have in fact been operating within Iran for the past 6 months.

Not surprisingly, the Bush Administration has denied the report, saying "[The article] is so riddled with errors of fundamental fact that the credibility of his entire piece is destroyed."

Hey xarir.....good thread....an Islamic theocracy with nuclear weapons in the midst of all that oil....Perhaps a surgical air strike initated by Israel....yet again...would achieve the same strategic result. The US does not have enough ground forces to maintain security in Iraq, let alone open up another resource draining military front, not sustainable. I'm sure the US would love to be able to apply the Bush doctrine of pre emtive strike against Iran, which is fully deserveing of whatever retribution befalls them, still have not forgotten the siezing of the US embassy. In my opinion Iran remains a formative and dangerous foe of US foreign policy in the middle east. Beer/Scotch induced musing from Dabbler

I'm sure commandos have been operating inside of Iran for some time, gathering intelligence....... I think there is a big difference between than and a land invasion.

Not going to happen, just like the draft.
