The truth hurts...I know.
Being an American in Canada and having to deal with sometimes hidden, many times open, anti americanism...hurts, no question about it.
I am man enough to defend myself and slap people back with their own bullshit. Unfortunately my children are helpless.

Which, as best as I can make out is summarized by:
…anti-Americanism is aimed at Americans largely because they are Americans. It's not because of anything they've done to us; it's because of who they are and what they have: money and might.
Which seems a reasonable definition, though the word "largely" suggests the writer reserves the right to judge anti-Americanism on the basis of imputed motive, rather than the actual expression of the critic. Was there more? But of course this means that criticism of America, Americans, or their leaders that purports (one can be wrong without being anti-American surely) to support specific criticisms with specific facts escapes the label "Anti-Americanism".

I think we can both agree that name-calling is a pretty low form of argument, so let's just keep to facts, shall we?

In my view, whatever anti-Americanism exists in Canada exists because we are overloaded and bombarded each and every day with the images, the rhetoric, the news and the attitudes of Americans. Americans bring their reality into our lives each and every day and it is a different reality than ours.

We oftentimes view Americans as sanctimonious, as telling us and the rest of the world how to live, how to act and what is right and wrong but we feel that they themselves do not live up to the standards which they espouse.

Many of have seen "the ugly American" live and in person as visitors come to our country and feel it is theirs. We see broadcasters talk about how we should feel fortunate that we are "allowed" to share a continent with the U.S. We see case after case of ignorance about us.

We see ourselves in a free trade agreement with a partner who we feel is not interested in trading freely or fairly with us.

I have rarely seen blatant anti-Americanism in the way Langeweile speaks of. Does it exist in Canada? I'm sure it does. I'm also sure that it's likely worse now than it was than in the Clinton years because of the negative emotions engendered by GWB. Is it right for us to do this? No. Is it productive? No. Are we better than Americans? No - as a people they're just like us. Is there anti-Canadianism in America? Probably not because they likely know and care less about us than we do about them.

I think YYC is right, having lived in Australia I can tell you that even though they are half way across the world from the US they feel the US's presence. I was amazed at how much of the evening news in Sydney was US focused. I can only imagine how much Canada feels the US effect on its culture, economy, politics - and would naturally resent it sometimes.

Just like there are very few stories about "cat not stuck in tree", "house did not burn down".... only the negative gets reported or focused on. The US and Canada share so many common things that no one talks about that it's natural to focus on the differences.

Oh blatant anti-americanism is alive and well. The reason you don't see it or feel is because you are Canadian.

FREE TRADE I think it's funny that Canadians complain about the lack of free trade, while quietly protectinng industries that are dear to their own heart.

To judge a country by TV images and by the behaviour of a few "rednecks" is a very small window to judge a country.
Just the definition of an American should be an interesting conversation.
Which group defines an American for you? There is a profound difference within the country on that very definition. Be it geographic or by nationality.
People are very different from each other if you live in Chicago, Dallas or San Francisco.
The very notion of lumping all of us together and define us as one is very shortsighted.

It seems there has been a lot of anti Canadian sentiment coming from the US.

When Bush was first elected, he basically ignored Canada, instead going to Mexico.

During the 911 attack, Canada took in planes and people without question. Canada made whatever recourses where needed available to the US, including being the first military forces available, committed, and ready to fight in the Afghanistan. I was proud to see our commitment, unfortunately, Canada soon became part of the “against us group, in Bush’s you are either with us, or against us, policy. With Bush now being against Canada, the people of the US seemed to follow.

There are many issues, such as news that US companies were refusing to sell goods to Canada, like surgical face masks needed by our hospitals during the SARS outbreak, that did not go over well here.

It is unfortunate that the US, our biggest trading partner, neighbour and friend seems to now be against us Canadians.

Lang your full of crap. Guys look at the date on the article, Feb/03.

2003!!! thats nearly two years old Lange - at the hieght of the debate about Iraq. This post is just to flame - it is hardly the same issue as today.

If you want to debate Canadian sentiment about the US, get a more current article or stop posting such bull.

bbk
You can't judge this issue because:

1) You are Canadian

2) Your kids are not Americans and don't go in to a Canadian school

While the post might be old, the reality today hasn't changed...sorry.

Yes there is anti-Americanism in Canada. I have seen it and quite frankly, I sometimes participate in it. Why? While some citizens of the USA (they are not Americans by the way), are good folk, there is a large majority that are ignorant, self-centred people with no respect of any other country or way of doing things. I see this every day working for a client that is controlled by an US based company. No matter how many times you tell them that a certain thing will not work in Canada, they will not beleive you. Only when their plan fails do they realize it and then they are pissed and blame you for not telling them.

Go to any resort island in the Carribean, you can tell the guy from the US a mile away. He's the loud obnoxious (sometime drunk) that is trying to convince some guy working there he should get something for nothing (or at least a discount).

Langeweile, what is the problem with your kids in Canadian schools? Are you like the ex-Raptor that did not want his kids going to school here because they were learning the metric system and they did not pledge allegiance to the stars and stripes in the morning? Maybe you don't want them to learn the truth about The War 1812, or that the World Wars were actually fought by other countries before you felt it was time to save the free world?

If it is so bad here, why are you staying?

I teach my kids to respect people regardless of their race, origin, nationality, sexual preference or religion.
This includes respecting the country they are living in, PERIOD.

I have spend quiet some time in several resorts in the USA and in Europe. Loud, drunk and obnoxius people are not an American Trademark alone.
I have met drunk, loud and obnxoius people from everywhere. Does that make all Brits, Germans, Austrians,m Sweds and Canadians loud, drunk and obnoxius? NO...NO...NO

Why can't some people here just simply admit, that you don't have to be an American to be loud, obnoxius, drunk, stupid etc...Why can't some of you just simply acknowledge that ignorance and lack of tolerance is not an American trademark alone?
Why can't you just admit that there is a level of anti americanism, bigotry and racism within Canada as well?

Why do some of you think this doesn't happen in Canada?

This is very true but can you name any country where this is not true?

I suspect that there is a lot of truth in what you say about anti-americanism as I do often hear people make negative generalizations about Americans. However, given the number of racial comments I heard when I lived in the U.S., I would say that Canadians are not the only ones to make negative generalizations. Still posts like this thread are a good way of reminding people of the evils of such generalizations as I am not sure such people are always aware of what they are doing/saying.

To hear you say it all Canadians are anti-American - it just isn't so. Your use of an article during a stressful period of our relationship is just wrong.
BBK I was going back in my posts and i couldn't find the passage where I acussed ALL Canadians to be anti-american.
I specifically indentified about 10% in some earlier posts.

And no I don't deny any nations it's sovereignty. IMHO Canada doesn't have enough of it.
You should be proud of your country and have the courage to define yourself as "I am a Canadian".

Quiet frankly if some of you bow to the White House or not doesn't make a damn difference. The great thing about freedom includes the right to disagree.

It has nothing to do with the truth. Which this isn't. You reference a blog to back your argument. Yeah OK. Diverting the ineptitude the current US president has and the disdain that non Americans have towards him and passing it along as anti-americanism is seriously reaching. Good try though.

Langeweile, you are constantly complaining about Canadian politics and atttitudes. Do Canadians disagree with the US on some matters - sure. I disagree with my own brothers on certain things - so what. I have travelled in the US and I heard some of the most ignorant, damning things said about Canada. - again so what. Majority of the American i know are great people and by in large Canada and the US agree on most of the major issues.

Sorry to hear about your kids being cut up at school but i got news for you, this happens to alot of kids depending on their culture, skin or religion. Does it make it right no, but unfortunately it happens.

You know you can always get a job in the US where you'll be safe from all these nasty Canadians.

ps nice dog
