Today we remember MLK a great civil rights leader. Unfortunately the civil rights leaders of today have chosen not to follow his path.

He never bought in to the "victim" mentality of the current leaders. He was a proud black man, that believed in self reliance.

And without doubt, if he had been alive, you would have hated him.

That comment was totally unnecessary and inappropriate!

PS: the Steelers got lucky. They better stop putting all that
pressure on Ohio Ben. Too much pressure for a rookie.
Best of luck.

The funny part is, that people like danmand call people on the right prejudice. he automatically assumes, that just because I am a conservative I am anti-black. Far from the truth.

People are people not matter what color. I have met white assholes and I have met black assholes. Stupidity knows no clolor.

Yeah, you are right on the Steelers. They got lucky, they should have lost that game. Shit happens.

My concern is "Big Ben". I believe the PIT "D" can keep the Steelers in the game, but can the offense score?
Should be a good game either way.

For the record: I never said, implied or assumed that you are racist or ani-black.

OK, I will explain then:

I think it is morally wrong to use Martin Luther King's name in a veiled attack on current civil rights leaders, whoever they may be. I do not think that you have any right to recruit MLK for your cause of "less government, less social and less welfare programs".
In the absence of direct evidence, I think it is safer to assume that, if MLK had been alive today, he would have been aligned with the "current civil rights leaders" rather than with the Bush government.

You are so full of assumptions.

I am not sure if less social and wellfare is the right answer, but I know more is not the answer either.
I am opposed to wellfare being used as a means of living. Wellfare should be a temporary help until you can find a job or better yourself.
This tragedy knows no color either. There are as many white people on wellfare than there is black people on wellfare. So as you can see it is not a "black thing".

My profession and my business relies heavily on untrained labor in the low income bracket. It never fails to amaze me that we so many people on wellfare, we have such a hard time filling exisitng openings. We have to rely on agencies that povide immigrant labor to fill the job.
This is true for the USA and Canada. At least in Canada we can get "legal" labor....LOL

This is not an issue of race. This is an issue of doing whatever is necessary to provide for your family and an issue of personal responsibility. I apologize if I made you belief it was an issue of race.

People like MLK in the past have more spoken about personal responsibility than waiting for a goverment hand out.
Interestingly enough Bill Cosby has picked up on this lately. A lot of what he has to say is very much in the spirit of MLK

OK let us try again then. Repeat after me:

Today we remember MLK, a great civil rights leader. He was a proud man, who believed in self reliance.

Read the "I have a dream" speech!

I took a Canadian friend of mine, who also happens to work for me, to the Lincoln memorial on Election Day last year. He stood at the top of the steps, looked down the mall as was overwhelmed. For those of us who grew up watching images of that speech (and more so I'm sure for those who were there) it was an unforgettable event in American history.

I'm a bit offended that a post on MLK was used to bash current civil rights leaders and discuss football.

Oh come on, almost every single thread on this board gets hijacked somewhere along the line.

I saw the "I have a dream" speech in its entirety for the first time last and was absolutely stunned. Here was a man of vision, conviction and wisdom who stood up in front of God knows how many people and gives this speech, without notes or a teleprompter, that is one of the great speeches in history.

I miss the fact that no one speaks like this anymore. What a loss for us all that spin doctors, the media and, I guess, society in general nowadays has taken that skill away from us.

Another MLK Day has passed, and as we peruse this thread (resurrected from the Archives section), we can see that some things haven't changed much since 2005.

Peace out, homeys!!

Sadly if anything, things have gotten worse.
Sad how the USA is moving backwards in many ways.

langeweile what a blast from the past. A real right-wing nutjob. He was a real posting whore and admitted it. lange got himself banned then came back under the handle Frasier till being outed. It was pretty easy to out him since he still posted and thought like lange. Wonder what lange is up to. Heck he may even be back under another handle for all we know.....:p

Is it lost on anyone that the US has a black POTUS?

Overrated. I think he is overshadowed by many US figures who have done way more, yet are not as well promoted constantly in schools.

Depends on who you talk to. Pappy and hinz insist referring to him as that black/white guy.
