The results of a poll published in the Iraqi Arabic newspaper Alsabaah:

The poll was of 4974 Iraqis living in and around Baghdad.

The following is the translation of the poll and the results:

“Will the security problems cause you to?
Not come out and vote the day of elections = 18.3%
Come out and vote the day of elections = 78.3%
No opinion = 3.4%

“Do you support the Iraqi Government having its own official newspaper?
Yes = 67.7%
No = 30.9%
Do Not know = 1.4%

“Do you support military action against the terrorists?
Yes = 87.7 %
No = 11.1%
Don’t Know = 1.2%

Very interesting poll. And credibility factor sounds high being its an Iraqi Arabic newspaper. I wonder if the newspaper will be there tomorrow...

I was thinking the same thing - I'd ask the question a few different ways:

Do you support US and British troops in Iraq ( I think the nays of 60%)

Do you want US and UK troops to leave now (Nay of 70%)

Would you like Saddam back (Nay 95%)

Just my opinion.

What about the Sunnis?

If they don't vote, it could put the legitimacy of the elections in jeopardy!

This election is going to be a sham of a farce, and the government put in place won't survive a year after the US troops leave - if they ever do.

At least the majority of Iraqis will have an opportunity vote in a free election. Will it be perfect - hardly. As for Ranger's comment that any government formed from this election falling within one year after the US leaves - I'm not sure on that - the problems Iraq faces with the violence is mainly caused by Sunnis with the vast majority of Shia's sitting on the sidelines waiting for this election. If there is no election, the Shia radicals will jump into the fight causing even more bloodshed. Since the majority population is Shia and the fact the Kurds gain far more political power with this setup, I really think the Sunni should re-think their position and understand that there is no way they will return to power in the same manner they did with Sadaam.

I think it is way to early to dismiss this election - will it be perfect - hardly but it will serve to do one thing and that is to establish the new order.

As for the US leaving, one only needs to look at what Rummy, Powell and Bush have said in the run up to the war. They have been consistant in saying that at min. the US would be there for five years and as such we can expect the US to leave in about 2008. As it becomes apparent that the Sunni will lose power no matter what they do, the desire to fight will wain (human nature) and the desire to become involved in the political structure will increase.

I agree with BBk's assesment. It would be foolhardy to expect a perfect election under those circumstances.
It would not be in the Sunis interest not to participate, there non-participation will make matters worse for them in the long run. A small voice in the goverment is better than no voice.

Like always before elections the media has it usually wrong. While their might be a small radical fraction that won't show up, my guess is that the majority of Iraquis will seize the opportunity and vote. What alternative options do they have???

I agree with the first two PP and hope the last is correct, the elections have to go on, the next phase needs to be started.

I think US troops will be there for a while, the Iraqi people are in no shape to secure their own country, too bad but there it is. I would hope the US forces will continue to push the Iraqi's forward and pull themselves into the background. An elected government will have a much greater moral authority to take action, and could ask us to leave if it likes.

I post this with the disclaimer, that drudge has been right and ahead of everybody else, but has also been wrong on many occassions.
Stay tuned.
We can only hope it's true.

I have to believe the insurgents are planning to make as many strikes as they can to distrupt the election, and demonstrate that US forces are not in control. If a suicide bomber can get into an army compound undetected, how are they going to keep them away from polling places? I don't expect the US to describe their security measures, but find it odd there has been so little said to reassure the Iraqi people that they will be protected.

If 88% want military action AGAINST terrorism, why would 60 or 70 % want to get rid of the troops who were creating the military action against terrorism. You could add to your questions "Do you think that the Iraqi Military has the ability to act decisively against terrorism without outside assistance?"

Sure - ask that question - works for me.
That I think you'd be shocked by the results just indicates how well brain-washed you are by your President.

No, you'd be shocked at how dulled your senses are by your hate of the current administration - you're blind.

Good Lord. Why is it getting increasingly difficult for people here to discuss things without resorting to childish taunts? Beyond silly.
