What's up board.

Thinking about making a trip to Niagara in a few weeks. I have always driven in the past but this trip I am thinking about flying into Buffalo Airport.

My question: which is the cheapest & easiest way to get from the Airport to the boarded. Also I have heard sometimes the boarder patrol can be dicks when you're coming through in a taxi, is this true?

thanks in advance

If you're planning on staying a day or longer you may be better off with a rental car which can cost <$30/day. Just shop around for the best rates. Had one a couple years ago, awhile after 9/11, and had no problems crossing any of the bridges plus they had insurance coverage for going into Canada at no extra cost, you just had to ask for this coverage though.

Use the 33 Expressway and NYS Thruway I-190, for the best routes to the border from the airport, about 15 minutes to the Peace Bridge, about 30 to the Rainbow Bridge.

Haven't got a clue what a taxi would run but have a feeling it would end up costing more than $30.

For sure, grab a car at the airport, Avis or Thrifty are usually 25 bucks or less. Tell em your coming up to do some Niagara Falls siteseeing at the border, just be polite and they will not give you any flack. There are lots of inexpensive hotels in Niagara on Lundys Lane as well, you cant go wrong!

beaware that the border guys know that the car is rented so dont try and bs them or they get ticked. Just tell them your going to the casino for some r and r and then a little food and you wont have ant problems.

Enterprise is $9.95 a day on weekends in most areas. But if you don't have more than a 2-3 hour drive then it probably is not worth flying. It will most likely take you near two hours to fly each way with the new security.

They are very suspicious of rental cars.

Enterprise is the cheapest car rental in the area. Problem is the only allow 75 miles a day and the mileage rate is sky high. Round trip from the airport to the Lundy's Lane is about 60 miles so it won't leave much room to spare. From the Airport take 33 west to 90 east to 290 west to 190 north. Cross over Grand Island ($.50 toll onto the Island, welcome to NY.) exit at the base of the second Bridge onto the Robert Moses Parkway. Exit at he signs to follow the Robert Moses Parkway. It will lead you to the Rainbow Bridge. Cross the Bridge and you in NF Canada. Check with your auto insurance carrier regarding your coverage for rental vehicles. All states have different requirements so you may or may not need the coverage from the rental company. Be sure everyone knows you taking the vehicle to Canada to be sure that you have the proper coverage.

The directions may sound confusing, but they are the shortest and most direct to the Falls,

Feel free to PM if you need any other info.

But some of the low rates such as Enterprise are not at airport but have to pick up somewhere else.

I've shopped for cars many times arriving in Buffalo and usually National is about the best. But I go 10 days usually. In September National for 10 days including taxes etc was $US375.75. Always unlimited mileage. Ironically when I fly into Toronto, Hertz is often the lowest deal which is surprising since usually they are high priced.

I have always used the Peace Bridge since I make my first stop at Pure Platinum in FT Erie on my way to the Falls. Then usually stop at Cristals on the South side and maybe other clubs. I usually arrive late at night.

I have zillions of credit card "gold" type cards that cover rental car insurance. Primary if on Business or secondary to your auto policy if non business (I am always on business). They all say they are good in the U.S. and CANADA! I think most U.S. auto policies cover Canada...but not Mexico. Canada is much safer!

The only thing the rental car counter tells me about going to Canada is they give me an extra copy of something since if stopped the Canadian cops want to see it if a rental car but not needed if stay in the U.S.

Never had any delay or problem crossing the border either way. Purpose of trip is to visit friends in the Falls and Hamilton, nothing more ever asked. Usually they don't even take my passport like they do when I fly into Toronto. Of course I'm an old guy that probably doesn't look like up to no good!

If you don't have a passport, you need drivers license and an original CERTIFIED birth certifate. A passport is so much easier and easy to get, just apply far enough ahead of time so don't have to pay extra fees for expediated processing.

Coming back from Canada via Peace Bridge I've seen truck traffic backed up at a standstill for zillions of miles (once about half way back to the falls). But the car lane goes very fast.. past all the sitting trucks for miles!

At the border/customs just be sure you stay behind the (forget color) line. Only one car at a time can be maybe 20 feet of another since they have bomb sniffers.. sniffing you and car for explosives and who knows what else!

Canada is easy to get in and out of even after our 9/11... unless maybe you fit some bad guy profile or have a name that is similar to someone on the terriost watch list at airports. But I don't recall even being asked my name when I drive in.

Most of all Canada is very worth visiting since what is totally a crime in the U.S. is 100% legal in Canada (outcall escorts) and no hassle usually with incalls or strip clubs (full contact nude laps not a bawdy violation per the Canadian Supreme Court).

One last warning when crossing into Canada.

If you have been convicted of any crime, Including DWI, you may not be allowed to enter. They do check at Canada Customs. They have ways of knowing, I had a friend who was refused entry because of a DWI conviction.

Just a heads up to everyone who is thinking of crossing.

If heading to Ft. Erie use the Peace Bridge. Going to the Falls, use the Rainbow Bridge. Traffic on the Peace Bridge is usually heavier due to the truck traffice. Rainbow Bridge does not allow truck traffic.

Feel free to PM since I've live in the Buffalo area all of my life.
