UN troops buy sex from teenage refugees in Congo camp

By Cahal Milmo

25 May 2004

Teenage rape victims fleeing war in the Democratic Republic of Congo are being sexually exploited by the United Nations peace-keeping troops sent to the stop their suffering.

The Independent has found that mothers as young as 13 - the victims of multiple rape by militiamen - can only secure enough food to survive in the sprawling refugee camp by routinely sleeping with UN peace-keepers.

Testimony from girls and aid workers in the Internally Displaced People (IDP) camp in Bunia, in the north-east corner of Congo, claims that every night teenage girls crawl through a wire fence to an adjoining UN compound to sell their bodies to Moroccan and Uruguayan soldiers.

The trade, which according to one victim results in a banana or a cake to feed to her infant son, is taking place despite a pledge by the UN to adopt a “zero tolerance attitude to cases of sexual misconduct by those representing the organisation.

Sex scandal in Congo threatens to engulf UN's peacekeepers
By Jonathan Clayton and James Bone

They should be rebuilding the country, but foreign workers face serious accusations

HOME-MADE pornographic videos shot by a United Nations logistics expert in the Democratic Republic of Congo have sparked a sex scandal that threatens to become the UN’s Abu Ghraib.
The expert was a Frenchman who worked at Goma airport as part of the UN’s $700 million-a-year effort to rebuild the war-shattered country. When police raided his home they discovered that he had turned his bedroom into a studio for videotaping and photographing sex sessions with young girls.

The bed was surrounded by large mirrors on three sides, according to a senior Congolese police officer. On the fourth side was a camera that he could operate from the bed with a remote control.

When the police arrived the man was allegedly about to rape a 12-year-old girl sent to him in a sting operation. Three home-made porn videos and more than 50 photographs were found.

And of course, if you replaced the words "UN peacekeeper" with "American solider" and "Democratic Republic of Congo" with "Iraq" there would be no end to this scandal in the press.

Cheers,

-djk

Surprise. Soldiers (Teenagers) trained to act against societal ideals do some bad things? Only been happening for a few thousand years. And yes, the US media has the job of being critical of the government. Same isn't true for much of the world.

They don't say what nationality the "UN peacekeepers" were, so you don't know that they weren't "American soldiers".

Should it matter where the soldiers come from?
Or are you saying you will be only outraged if they are Americans?
Your statement surprises me. A guy that can discuss American war crimes ad nauseum, only has a one liner for this kind of behaviour? Strange indeed.

Lange, I'm trying to point out that there is no nationality called "UN". These soldiers come from other nations on the planet.
To IMPLY that this further proves "UN corruption" is ignorant.

Face it, some people just hate America.

I didn't bring up the American angle.

Some people will stoop pretty low to pick up shit they can use for political gain.

Take your own medicine, please. You are contributing nothing except the same old dribble.

Go and see an SP and post a review; it will do you good. Your poster of Condoleeza Rice must be getting stained by now.

Hell, I will double my offer to $20.

You really need to read some books - your education seems very poor and see if you upgrade from Jack and Jill books
At least I have a rudimentary knowledge of grammar, which you seem to miss.

Why don't you want to see an SP?

Funny how all they can do is ramble and bitch about America still.

Sad to see they're only bothered by child prostitution if it involves Americans.

It's the same old assortment of nations - mostly near-third world countries looking for a quick buck, and always terribly underequipped and trained.
Sad.
Many of the leaders of these missions have terrible things to say about the state of these troops.
If the leaders of the bigger and middle powers would do more to contribute, we wouldn't be in these messes.

That last sentance sounds like what I've been saying for two years now about Canada. We finally agree on something.

Yep. That Canada and the US should both be contributing more to the UN.
Glad we agree.
