When a person decides on a course of civil disobedience they risk prison, a good example is Mohamad Ali. And often they are often admired for their conviction. But when they cut and run, they are cowards.

..I am not sure it is worth the price to piss of the States to let them in again. They would just drag us deeper into the mess.

Honestly dont see that as having any affect on relations. But I do see it as providing fodder for those in Canada who alreay hate the US.

..Joe Biden the other day says he sees the US being there several years at least.
Today no, but in three or 4 more years as the causalities mount.
I read one place there has been 11,000 casualities in Iraq alone.
We are talking about missing limbs.

I figure it takes 5 gernerations for a people to embrace an entirely new concept of government. Myself I suspect 125 years is the accurate number before it happens.

..well I dont have such powers of prediction. However I would agree that it would take a hunderd years or so to finally win the war.
As Kissinger has said, Billions of people, any one who has a TV sees how we live now.
The masses are starting to stir.

I'm not sure how it would be a crisis except for the effect on the US-Canada relationship. If they got over 'nam, they can get over this.

Let them in, I'm sick of being one of only 20 million or so carrying the health-care burden. Another couple of million tax-payers would help.

There will not be a draft so the flow will only be a handful - not an issue.

Have to agree with OTB....
Unless North Korea decides to mount a war on South Korea or Mexico invades Texas, The draft isn't going to happen any time soon.

I'm not sure if I agree with this. Given the declining numbers of those people that are not re-enlisting I can't see how the US will be able to sustain the levels they need to continue the various "projects" they have on the go, even with the redeployment (from Europe) that is to happen.

From what I understand (I could be wrong on this), I think the declining numbers are in the National Guard and Reserves. The Army itself is actually attaining its recruitment goals.

The draft will not happen.
The US military is committed to keeping a professional army. If the US sent draftees into Iraq the body count would be a lot higher.

The US government and the Pentagon will just have to revise their policies on hiring and keeping it soldiers. Higher pay, greater benefits, better pensions, etc... will keep exisiting soldiers and draw in new blood.

Not like the US could stop the dodgers from coming here, even if they wanted.

You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

Yes, Canada should certainly support ALL political refugees fleeing an unjust nation bent on persecuting them.
I wholeheartedly agree.
:D
Our doing so can only encourage further acts of disobedience against the tyrant nations of the world. We should push as hard as we can for regime change in these places, while opening our doors to those who need our protection.
LOL
(Of course, this is how you USED to effect regime change. Now you just throw in the tanks. LOL)

Interesting post papasmerf..... I was not around for the war in Vietman, so I cannot comment.

My first inclination would be to agree with you that those who dodged the draft were cowards. However, when i think about it some more, I am not so sure...

If Canada Martin suddenly decides that we are going into the Iraq war full force and they are going to draft any able bodied male under the age of 40, into the army. I am quite sure that I would not be going to war. If that makes me a coward in your eyes... so be it..

I am willing to lay down my life for Canada to protect our great country. I am willing to lay down my life if Canada decides to get involved in conflicts like the Ivory Coast etc to help innocent people.

I am not willing to die for Mr. Bush's place in history. I will not blindly follow along for a cause that is highly questionable. My name is slowandeasy and I AM CANADIAN.

Well put my man!!

Papa- This post sums up precisely why I rolled my eyes at you.

A man/woman who refuses to 'kill in the name of' somthing they don't believe in, and is willing to back it up by leaving there family,
friends, and homeland behind...potentially forever; Is hardly a coward IMO.

If Dubya told you to jump off a bridge...would you?
