I have query regarding std testing. I recently subjected myself to a full battery of tests at the local hospital. The time before this, I opted to go to a free clinic.

Strangely, the clinic only performed swabs and urine tests. They did not check for syphilis, hepatitis B or HIV. I was told to contact my GP if I wanted additional tests done. I was a bit put off by this, so that is why I went elsewhere. I figure that if I'm going to engage in this hobby, I owe it to myself and others to be responsible and get checked out thoroughly.

My question is, was the clinic prudent in their approach?? I think not, as they neglected to address all possibilities.

I welcome any and all opinions.

I'd love to help but I've never been tested/never spent much time getting medical attention, I really don't have anything to contribute (and yet I'm still posting:confused: )

i do not really see the problem here.

perhaps the clinic does not have the funding to do all the testing ... so they referred you to a hospital or md if you felt it was necessary to have the additional tests ...

some of these clinics are managed by med students or nurse practioners ... they would have limits on the duties that they could perform.

and forgive me ... but don't most std's in men have symptoms?

and all things being equal, isn't it more likely that a female will contract HIV than her male counterpart?

The clinic was prepared to do a swab for Gonnorhea, and a urine test for Chlamydia. They would not test for Syphilis because according to them, the chance of contracting it was rare. (They did not even mention Hep B) When I voiced my concern that:

A) Sometimes symptoms are not present; therefore I would like to be tested.

B) I had read that Syphilis was on the increase

C) The hospital conducts a full range of tests at their std clinic

I was told to make an appointment with my GP. My point is that the standard of care should not vary to any great extent between facilities. If it does, then those individuals who go to free clinics are being shortchanged. Value judgements on which tests should be administered have no place where one's health and well being is concerned.

I'm not exactly sure on all the regulations on where blood can and cannot be drawn, but I assume that these free clinics either cannot afford a licenced venupucturist (an attendant who draws blood) or they are not allowed to have a liceced venupuncturist. Either that or maybe there's a shortage of them around so they only work in the major medical clinics and hospitals (very likely).

Anyway, whenever you are getting tests done outside of a hospital (ie your GP, med clinic, free walk-in clinic) for the most part all samples taken (swabs, urine, blood) are sent to the 3 or 4 major medical labs in Ontario (next time you go in for a checkup read the form that lists all the tests that the doctor requested as each should have the name of the company that is doing your tests). This is where most samples are tested.

Additionally, tests like Hep B and HIV are commonly done and these blood samples are actually sent to the ministry of Public Health (they do the tests at their facilities). The best place, and maybe only place to get these tests are through a doctor. Then the doctor will send you to a venupuncturist, who will take your samples and send them to a central lab. The central lab will send it off to Public Health, and Public Health wil do the tests. The results will be sent to the doctor. And I beleive only when the test is positive will the patient be notified.

I can only assume that you did not go to the Hassle Free clinic. They are not irresponsible and will test for what is necessary, also they couldnt care less what you do in bed, they have heard it all and are not going to raise eyebrows unless you tell them you dont use condoms. The test for Ghonorrhea was a waste of time, you would recognize the feeling of peeing razor blades soon enough and get help anyway.

I agree w/gruntr. I've been check out at the Hassle Free Clinic before and they do what it takes to make sure you are clean. The only potential drawback is that I think the male nurse/attendant who administered some of the basic test to me might have been gay. I guess it is understandable since the clinic is in "Boystown" and probably has a lot of gay people going to the clinic. Anyway it didn't bother me too much and I had no problems but there are probably some people out there that will feel uncomfortable.
