does anyone else find that most canadians know more about and are more interested in US politics than our own? i find that strange. i wouldn't be suprised if the same people so wrapped up in the presidential election, wouldn't know who their prime minister was.

The U.S. administration, particularly the current one, can have a much bigger impact on the lives of all of us than the effect of our own government. The "war on terror", global recessions etc. etc. are just some examples. Whether or not the Liberals will take more money from us than the Conservatives, or who will provide us with better access to affordable health care are certainly issues which are of concern to us, but not to the same degree.

We are a global family with a global economy, and the U.S. has a much larger role to play in how the system works. Besides, with all the hoopla, U.S. elections are much more fun!

Absolutely.

To watch, on TV, at a distance and with relief that the same circus atmosphere stays on the other side of the border.

It's a scripted and predictable primetime dramedy that makes a sham of the democratic process. Sadly, the trend will emerge in Canada.

Voter dissatisfaction and low turnout only exacerbates the power of the sham that is becoming western elections. "Freedom" and "Democracy" my gramma's patutty.

Bitter but happy. Peace.

I think that canadian politics contain less contraversy. The Canadian political parties are similar in outlook and the decisions made have less of a global impact than those in the US. Canadian politics is also less partisan, with voters being less likely to identify with one party than americans. Essentially, less contraversy and less personalization of views makes Canuck politics less interresting. US politics makes for better TV

Banshie is also correct about impact of politics in the US. Informed people in the land of beer and back-bacon want to know that what goes on below the 49th as it will effect us.

Finally, with 1/2 of out tv stations being american, it's hard to avoid.

..sad as I am to say it we are basically a colony of the States, so to me its basically our election as well. How many of you know that under NAFTA, we are not allowed to divert any of our energy exports to the States ? so people on the East Coast and Ontario would be shit out of luck if our imported oil from overseas would be cut off, while our Alberta oil would be still flowing down to the States. Thanks Muhlroney you lousy prick. Just once I'd love to boot him in that chin of his.

Me thinks you have that reversed.

US has yet to denounce Canada, wheather it be our leaders or people.

Just another example of our obsession with the US. We'll never amount to much as long as we keep obsessing over our neighbors to the south which is why all the US talk gets tiresome to me.

Two little threads on our sub disaster and 10 times as many on foreign politics. Sad...

You are kidding, of course? You forget the tongue lashing we got from the U.S. ambassador over the decision not to join the coalition.

Ever here the story about Lyndon Johnson lifting up Lester Pearson by the scruff of the neck and and pinning him to the wall?

We don't get denounced so much as told that we have to toe the line. And, if we don't, watch out!
