Paul Manafort and special counsel reach tentative plea deal: Sources

By KATHERINE FAULDERS, TRISH TURNER, JOHN SANTUCCI MATTHEW MOSK

Sep 13, 2018, 6:28 PM ET

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has tentatively agreed to a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller that will head off his upcoming trial, sources familiar with the negotiations tell ABC News.

The deal is expected to be announced in court Friday, but it remains unclear whether Manafort has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors or is simply conceding to a guilty plea, which would allow him to avoid the stress and expense of trial, according to three sources with knowledge of the discussions.

Manafort and his most senior defense attorneys spent more than four hours Thursday in discussions with a team of special prosecutors who are involved in the ongoing investigation into whether there was collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

ABC News spotted the team arriving in a dark SUV Thursday morning, pulling into a secret entrance out of public view at the building where Special Counsel Robert Mueller is based.

Just under a year ago, the 69-year-old veteran GOP operative was charged in Washington, D.C., with several counts of fraud and failing to register as a foreign agent by the special counsel. A second case was opened in Virginia earlier this year on related charges that ended with a jury finding Manafort guilty on eight counts out of an 18-count indictment, facing a maximum of 80 years behind the bars, though under sentencing guidelines the term is likely to be closer to seven years. He has not been sentenced in that case.

Manafort has been held in jail for the last several months after prosecutors accused him of witness tampering.

He joined the president's campaign in March 2016 and became campaign chairman in May, and left the campaign in August days after the New York Times and the Associated Press ran reports that he had been tied to alleged undisclosed foreign lobbying practices in Ukraine.

A spokesperson for Manafort and a representative for the special counsel’s office both declined to comment.

ABC News' Allison Pecorin contributed to this report.

Well, well, well, it appears that Butler's proverbial snake has wrapped himself tightly around Trumps neck.

Only a matter of time before the other dominoes fall.

Stone, then Jr., then Kushy and finally the traitor.

Yee haw!

Text of plea deal.

Stone, Kushy and Ivanka will all flip. As Trump is led away into the cells in handcuffs after being convicted, Ivanka will blow him a little kiss and say: "Sorry, Daddykins. They'll let me go now and I can still be president some day." And Mueller will just shake his head and turn away.

Has all the makings of a classic film noir.

You are assuming several things.

He has anything to say.
Impeachment applies to crimes prior to election
Opposition research is a crime

That's just to start.

You are once again going to be disappointed

Butler, we all know that you are a legal genius. But....

Mueller seems very interested in flipping those close to Trump. If all that was on the table was Page, Flynn and Manaforte and their dirty deals, wouldn't Mueller just simply sentence them and move on? But Mueller is clearly after someone else. And he's a pretty smart cookie, isn't he?..... Even smarter than you maybe.

So who is that "someone" that Mueller wants to nail? I think that I know who it is.

He is drawing things out. But you know that in these white collar cases cooperation( to save time, money) is common as they are non violent.

Second he can in good faith cooperate, have little to say and still get his reduced sentence. That defendants get the benefit of the doubt with judges on this.

And that's without even going into whether or not the meeting was anything illegal. The only exposure I see is to Jr. And that may be shaky.

There is no actual crime imo, and no process crime exposure to Trump.

So what's left when it comes to Manafort?

1. manafort could have just pled guilty to save money/aggravation related to trial but he did more. He now cooperates.

2. manafort is undeniably dirty as shit and he sat at the meeting in question with Jr. and others while being campaign chairman and he has little to say? While at this point lying to mueller would destroy his deal and subject him to essentially a life sentence? Riiiight.

I'm going to add a little tidbit. Guilliani has said the Trump and Manafort legal teams have been in communication all this time with a joint defense strategy. All above board of course.......

1. Appearance of cooperation to a judge(and they decide sentencing not the lawyers) can result in a reduced sentence on all charges, and for them to run concurrently. It's a white collar crime, in Washington. These things get easy treatment.

2. Of course he is dirty. He is a snake. And you are assuming a crime occured at the meeting. Nothing came of it from all appearances.

Or it can be interpreted as opposition research.

One more for you kids. Manafort may well be flipping on associated unrelated to Trump.

Other Russians, other lobbyists who engaged in similar behavior. Even other politicians he worked for.

He has alot of years of dirty work. Heck The Podesta worked for him in Ukraine.

Lots of dirt he can fling.

Right. Mueller cuts him a deal even though he has nothing to say. Duh.

Jail does.
He did with Papadopolous. And I didn't say he had nothing. But as you are fond of saying, you don't know what he has. I'm thinking he would have turned before conviction. Now he is offering other things.

Yes he can be charged after out of office. So what. We are discussing getting him out before then. That's the point right?

Butler, you know DA about what Mueller is doing. Let's move on, shall we?

BTW, Manaforte forfeits $46 miliion of his stash. Know how much Mueller's investigation has cost so far???... $30 million. Mueller just made the US government $16 million. The investigation has paid for itself for the next year.
