This Is the President on 9/11

Double fist-pumping his way into a memorial service in Pennsylvania.

On September 11, 2001, during the hours following the terror attacks that killed almost 3,000 innocent people in New York, DC, and Pennsylvania, then-real estate tycoon Donald Trump called into a local news station, bragging about how the fall of the Twin Towers meant his building was now the tallest in lower Manhattan. Now, 17 years later, Trump's position in life has changed drastically. His ability to respectfully address the biggest American tragedy of his lifetime, though, has not.

On Tuesday, Donald Trump, current leader of the free world, arrived in Pennsylvania for a memorial service honoring the lives lost on United 93, and somehow thought, yes, this was the perfect time to pump his fists like the world's shittiest Rocky.

The celebratory move—both fists raised, his bottom lip clenched tightly between his teeth—doesn't seem particularly fitting for such a sad and somber day, but it doesn't really seem like the September 11 attacks were on Trump's mind when he rolled out of bed to begin with. The president began his morning tweeting about collusion, before quickly retweeting a post about 9/11 and slapping on a few hashtags, then launching into a rambling, congratulatory message about Rudy Giuliani.

And then, finally, like some kind of strange afterthought to make sure the world knew what day it was, he tweeted a simple statement of mathematic fact, punctuated by a particularly out-of-place exclamation point.

This is the President of the United States—a guy who once said he watched "thousands" of Muslims cheering in Jersey City with the towers fell and said he lost "hundreds of friends" in the attack but never named one. A guy who used the day in 2013 to tweet about all the "haters and losers" out there.

A guy who fist-pumps and thumbs-up his way through 9/11 memorials.

At this point, should we even be shocked?

He is an embarrassment to the country and of to the office of president. The people who endorse him and these kinds of statements of his should be even more embarrassed.

Even butler, the Bernie supporter, should ridicule today's statement.

Within 48 hours of the twin towers falling, Trump was there with over 200 of his construction workers, to help search and clear. How many of you heard that on the news today?

b4u, I agree with you. How many of the fools bitching above even lifted a hand to help during or after that tragedy. Lots of bitching about Trump, Ford and anyone else who's not a Liberal snowflake but no action. When they grow up, maybe some of them may venture out from their mom's basements to vote.

He'll grab the hurricane by the pussy and pay it $140,000 to go away.

But he has a right to fist pump. After all, he single-handedly ended all terrorism in the world.

I know "I am sleeping well tonight" because Trump sweet talked that weird hairdo guy into giving up his nukes.

He also wouldn't pay the construction crew he hired to make himself look like a God of Mercy, so they left. Robert De Niro shut down his restaurants to feed the emergency workers on the scene. Steve Buscemi returned to his firehouse to assist with rescue efforts.

Today De Niro and Buscemi are seen as NYC heroes (Buscemi received a special citation from the NYFD) while Trump's is seen as a publicity stunt.

I was going to say that it was probably just a photo opportunity, but I thought, "well, maybe he really did do that.". Guess my first instincts were correct.

Trump is a piece of shit.

He said his people were pulling bodies out of the ruble. So far no one has been able to find any evidence that any of it is true. Surprise.

9/11 is very personal for me because literally the week before I was at Windows on the World for a final interview and had just been offered a job with the predecessor to the company I still work for (in Toronto). The NY office was in the North Tower too but on a lower floor where most of my future team and manager worked. At the time, people still thought it was a small plane that had hit, so there was no panic on the lower floors. Everybody got out safely but everybody, including me knows persons who died. Harrowing stories. Eg: Some people in offices on the same floor decided to go up to a transfer floor (to try to get an elevator) vs walking down and didn’t make it. I have a colleague who got out, was walking away, turned and looked back just as the second plane hit.

I believe that Trump had good intentions, like the entire City pulling together, and was caught up in the moment. Then in the weeks following, reality probably caught up with him and he reverted to form. It’s too bad, because if the guy in the video was real and sincere, he’d be a better President today.
