offer Jerome Iginla a huge contract that Calgary could not possibly match. In my opinion he is the best player in the game today, and he is just what the leafs need now and in the future, I would gladly give up the 5 first round draft picks as compensation, it's not like the draft picks are going to do the Leafs any good the way there scouting and draft history is. Besides the 5 first round draft picks would all end up in the mid to late 20 th picks over all. maybe calgary will have better luck with them then the Leafs will or have had with them.

So Fang, the money for my Leaf tickets is due on August 3, so if you want them put up the money and there yours for this year. They only sell them to me because I'm stupid enough to give them my money to hold on to with no hockey happening this year.

Slademan, if you could get Iginla for just 5 first rounders, you SHOULD be the Leafs' GM.
The Flames would match then get a lot more than that from a long line of teams and the Leafs would not be one because they have no blue chip prospects Calgary would be interested in. Coliacavo (sp.) and Stajan would be just the starting point. Who else would the Leafs have to offer?

If I were the Leafs' GM, I would begin by admitting this team is not a Cup contender and start moving my older, still valuable assets for some youth.

Similar to what I said about Thornton in the Glenn Murray thread but less realistic. Sure he's the same age and in the same boat as Thornton from a contract perspective, but Calgary management would probably work a little harder than Boston to keep him (i.e. match and trade if necessary) and Iginla being the upstanding, community minded, all around great guy tyhat he is, wouldn't screw the Flames like that. After the albeit unlikely cup run this year, Calgary can't start rebuilding already, eventhough they lost Konroy yesterday. There will be a big deal in Calgary for Iginla...but it would be nice to see him in blue and white.

I think since the Fedorov deal with the Hurricanes a few years back the GM's haven't been in favour of stealing players like that from each other. I don't know why...I don't tink you could trust any of them.

Of course, once Iginla leaves, I'm sure you'll rush to his defense and cite all kinds of mitigating factors.

If he finishes his career in Calgary, in the words of Monty Burns, "I owe you a Coke".

I'm not saying he will necessarily finish his career in Calgary and might leave in search of a cup as an unrestricted FA when he's in his 30's if he hasn't got one yet. But he won't screw the Flames by signing an offer sheet as a restricted free agent and put the Flames in that kind of spot...If his agent suggested that, I'd see him firing his agent first.

BTW Ranger- If the proposed restricted FA scenario should actually occur, I would not be coming to Jerome's defense and would re-evaluate my opinion of him and whether he is the appropriate leader and the face of Canadian hockey for the next 15, possibly 20 years. . As of now I believe he is " an upstanding, community minded, all around great guy".

Why would using the existing rules be "screwing" his current team, though?

The basic premise was that the GM for a day would sign Iginla to an offer sheet he knew the Flames could not match. Draft picks aside, that would be screwing the Flames because he is the heart of the team and main reason why the club might actually make money this year. A complete rebuild is not an option for the Flames at this point. They need to make the most of their momentum.

You rarely see restricted free agents move through the offer sheets unless an acrimonious relationship has developed between the team and player or if a player is looking specifically for a move i.e. Fedorov. I expect that either the Flames will offer Iginla a contract that is in the ball park for his fair market value or they will look at trade options. My point being, I don't see Iginla instigating a move unless something happens to the relationship between the club and the player.

If he did, I'd wish him luck, though - I wouldn't think he was "screwing the team".

Well it is obvious from other threads that we have different perspectives on a number of issues.

It's nice to see a toned down approach to your responses Ranger. I can live with simple disagreements when someone's not trying to prove their view is the only correct way of looking at something. :)

I disagree with you all, Calgary can't afford to keep Iginla long term and Boston refuses to Pay Thorton or anyone else for that matter any substantial amount.....so both players can be had for 5 first round draft picks because both teams won't match the qualifying offers if there high enough and out of there range. And either team will gladly take the 5 first round draft picks in hopes of rebuilding with cheaper labour.

Iginla doesn't play leaf style hockey.... he gets too many shots on net for a leaf player... or is that just what the leafs need? after all even when the leafs went on that huge Christmas time unbeaten streak 16gms? they were outshot in 14 of them...
