Well it's official - Phil Jackson will not be returning next year and Kobe has opted out of his contract - he's now an unrestricted free agent. If that's not enough for you Laker fans - there are also reports that Shaq has asked to be traded. I guess it really is the end of an era.

Figures.

My guess is that Phil will wait til a good team needs a coach - then like jock itch, he'll weasel his way in there.

Kobe, gotta wait and see; he might be turning big rocks into little rocks yet.

As for Shaq, I'd love to see this guy on blue collar team. Maybe the Pacers. But; he's got to get his attitude in check - he's not as good or as young as he used to be - last camp he showed up out of shape, which may have contributed to his little nagging injuries.

Well said healer. I think many teams have awakened to the fact that Phil inherits teams and doesn't necessarily build them or guide them to victory a la Pat Riley, Larry Brown, And Red Auherbach. That's also why he snubbed the Nuggets and New York in 1999, even though my Knicks went to the finals that year.

2) Kobe would make a good fit in Denver. Playing ball on his free time. Ouch. No seriously I think San Antonio gets him becuase of the cap space, and that in turn weakens the Lakers and other Western teams. Sadly the Kings made some foolish decisions and may not have the cap space to get Kobe.

3) About the only team that could afford Shaq now is Phoenix. I don't see that happening and he will remain in L.A. as a mentor for Luke Walton.
you are right about phil, but I think kobe will be staying in LA, shaq will be traded in a multi-team deal involving some one like tracy mcgrady stoudamire/marion and another 3 to 5 role players.......I dont think the spurs have enough $$ for 20mil/year kobe

I can't agree with you about Phil Jackson americanson. He is without question one of the best of all time. The school of thought that his teams win because of personnel only - and that his coaching is irrelevant is nonsense. It also does not reflect the reality of modern day professional sports - coaching makes a HUGE difference - and HIS certainly did with both the Lakers and the Bulls. BTW - have you looked at the rosters of the Riley and Auerbach championship teams lately?

Red Auerbach revolutionized fastbreak basketball when all other teams were playing a halfcourt style. He was also the architect of those 60's championship teams. He's the one that drafted guys like Sam Jones, John Havlicek, and dealt for Bill Russell.

Riley has proven that he can build solid playoff teams without the talent that he had on the Lakers. All you have to do is look at the Miami Heat and the New York Knicks.

Phil is a great coach, but he's not behind the X's and O's of both Laker and Bull squads. The Triangle offense is Tex Winter's brainchild. He also hasn't proven that he can win with inferior talent.
