On another thread Rerun brought up another interesting question / point.

For todays brain teaser...

Regardless of era, sport or team....who is the greatest coach of all time?

Hockey.....Bowman? or Brooks (for the miracle?)
Football....Lombardi or Papa Bear....Shula maybe?....
Basketball....Red or Riley?
Baseball....Stengel or Lasorda?
College sports???......Paterno?.....Tark during UNLVS rebels era?

Think of the numbers wins/losses....the teams themselves - is it easier to coach a team full of superstars? Lakers now, Bulls of the 90s or....is it harder? Do we admire men who do more with less? or should we consider dollars as well?

A no brainer its Bowman for sure with I think 8 stanley cups and I believe the teams he had coached did not miss the playoffs that often. What a way for him to retire by winning the cup in 2002!

Dude. I like your picks with a couple of modifications.

Even though Blake did great, no one compares to Bowman. Blake coached only the Habs who were successful before and after him. Bowman made every team he was on a contender, won the cup 8 times with 3 different teams and has career wins that will probably never be matched.

As for pro football, I considered George Halas and by the time he's finished, possibly Parcells along with Lombardi.

Pro baseball? I'll go with Sparky Anderson, who used to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs and is the only manager to win the WS in both leagues and John McGraw.

Hockey-Bowman is a no brainer. Stanley Cups and games coached and won he is at the top of every list. He stayed in the game 30 years and adapted to all the changes....expansion, Euro influx and influence, systems, player salaries and free agency.

Pro-Football-Don Shula. As another pretty coach Bum Phillips said, "He can hisn and beat yourn or he can take yourn and beat hisn."

College Basketball John Wooden. Nothing in that game compares to the UCLA dynasty.

You may have seen the best N.B.A. coach ever

.....in this years finals.......No, not the overhyped Phil Jackson......Larry Brown......may have brought the game back to it's roots....the idea that a "team" concept can destoy the "star" concept
