A few years ago I thought basketball would be to America what Football is to Europe or South America. The best shows up and smokes everybody else. The level of proficiency so high, reflected by nationalist pride that it elevates a game to an artform.

But....not in Basketball....not with the "dream team" - what a bunch of whining, self centered, money grabbing egomaniacs.

Larry Brown might be tagged as the first coach to actually lose an olympic gold since 92 because of the team he can't assemble.
Let's see....
Ray Allens wife is pregnant - he doesn't want to miss the birth (ok I might give him that- maybe)
McGrady - is getting married - apparently he couldn't get a hall for other than the 2 weeks during the olympics.lol.
Carter - hmmmm....soft, injury prone
Malone - old and injury prone
Kobe - ?might be turning big rocks into little rocks if convicted
Shaq- might be writing another book (check Shaq and the Beanstalk and Shaq and Jill - honest), making a rap CD or something.

But,
Brown does have some help - LeBron, Bibby, Marbury, Amare, Shawn Marion, Mr. Class - Duncan and ironically enough, Iverson.

Iverson? the same guy who was injured too this year - he stated he will play DESPITE nagging injuries.
In 2002 George Karl and Paul Pierce took the brunt of the media when they lost to Argentina, Yugoslavia and Spain in the Worlds, they ended up 6th. I hope this doesn't happen again.

But if it does....maybe it will be a good lesson.

Should the dream team fall flat, who's your pick for the gold?

Given the talent remaining, who do you want to see on this team.

I was thinking the Wallaces', Ben and Raheed for openers.

The Argentines and the Yugoslavs look good this year as well....or maybe....the Chinese (dark horse pick).....hmmmm

I love international tournaments now. The fans are absolutely nuts and pretty much everyone has an nba starter. Many international teams excel because the way their players know each other, only having to fit in a few superstars.

I've seen a few euroleague games on digital and those sands are singing and dancing and incredibly loud from an hour before the tip. Those players know something about pressure.

Uh-oh

Ben Wallace and Rip Hamilton just declined their invitation to the Olympics.

This team is not looking as good as it should...maybe the other teams might have a chance.

Look out for Yugoslavia in these Olympics. They are stacked at every position. Most of the guys on the Yugoslavian team are NBA quality type players.

Lithuania is the darkhorse in the Olympics. Prior to Songalia signing with the Kings, Lithuania had no NBA players during the European championships, yet they beat Spain the finals.

Who cares about the US and basketball! I hope CBC will not show a single minute of it. For those of you who haven't noticed Canada has a very good shot to win gold in B-ball(baseball). With the US and Japan out and half of Cuba suspended(fear of defection) we will bring back a medal.
