Tonya Harding whack whack whack

Before the Tonya Harding incident, women's skating wasn't anywhere near as big as it is now. After an infamous whack whack whack, the ratings went through the roof.

With the leading scorer just barely able to get 41 goals, how can hockey possibly interest the American sports fans looking for action clips?

When the RAngers were chasing the Cup in 1994, I recall an SI cover with the headline: "Why the NHL's hot and the NBA's not." Hockey was being hailed as THE up and coming sport in the US.

What a difference 10 years makes.

This SI writer is a twit.

Since when do arena football players make $5000000 plus per year?
Since when does AF league generate the same attendance figures or revenue?

When the USA get there own superstar hockey player like Canada had with Gretsky, then you'll see Nike, McDonalds and all the other American merchandising companies on the NHL bandwagon. That inturn promotes the NHL to those who may not so be inclined to watch.
Those that like hockey watch hockey, those like this twit writer can stay under their rock.

Back to my rum n' coke. --- Kev

Sorry but I'm inclined to agree with this article.

PROBLEMS:
You can barely see the puck on TV.
Games are too low scoring nowadays compared to the 80's.
Too much emphasis on defence.
Game Rules that seem to change every year (crease rule...etc).
Too much hitting.
Too much senseless fighting.
Some very dirty cheap shots that have resulted in near paralysis or career-ending injuries.
The NHL expanded to too many cities (and villages).
Way too many regular season games.
Too many teams make the playoffs.
The season carries on too late into the summer (spring).

I think Bettman ruined the game and thats what happens when you bring in a LAWYER.

I'll have to disagree on a few points.
The puck is not hard to see, BLACK puck on WHITE ice...of course when its under the goalie or up against a players skate then it's a different story.
Low scoring is only a problem to the casual sports fan, a true fan watches the actual game (the skill, strategy, etc.) this is why america has still yet to embrace International Football (Soccer).
Violence occurs in just about every team sport, look at baseball, those team brawls are a lot more offensive.
To many teams make the play-offs?!? it's the same amount as Basketball. If you were to drop it down to twelve than you'd need to 4 teams go on a bye like the NFL or drop it down to 8, then everyone would complain not enough teams were making it.
Cheap shots, severe injuries, these occur constantly in a Football game, and yet its often over-looked.

I agree too many regular games, but i'm sure it's hard to convince the owners to go back to less games, there by less revenue. But then again once again about the same number of games (82), and the MBL has well over either of these amounts.
Their is a problem with the fact it goes on for roughly nine months!
