Real grass at new U of T/Argo stadium?

I just saw on Sportsnet news that the new Varsity stadium will have real grass. Is that a good idea? A football game played in the rain can really chew up that kind of a field, not a good thing if there's a national team soccer game to be played there a day or two later. Wouldn't the new softer type of artificial surface be a better idea?

*This is not the astroturf stuff like SkyDome, it's the "flubber" as Chris Berman calls it that's now in many NFL stadiums (indoors and outdoors) and the Ottawa CFL stadium.

Its about time!

Football.....on grass.....a misty rainy fall day......a chewed up field....mud.....heaven - the way football was meant to be played.

Not in a dome, not on astroturf......on grass, outside, in the cold.

Real grass?

Good grass?

Are you sure?

Can you smoke it?

Does it sell by the yard or by the ounce?

the grass is pre-rolled...irie...smoke em if ya got em!

now if the CFL could only make the field less wide, add some cameras, defence and a running game we'd have a product to watch other than...

pass, pass, pass, field goal, kick, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, touchdown, kick, pass, pass, pass, pass, field goal, kick, pass, pass, pass, ah you get my point

Sportsnet had it wrong.

"Tentative plans are to use a FIFA-approved artificial FieldTurf instead of natural grass at Varsity. But a final decision won't be made until next year."

Also from The Star, a U of T vice-president says "The previous field was only useable for about three hours a day. This surface will allow use from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m."

It won't be decided for sure until October if the stadium will be built.

From what I am gathering it seems more than a 90% chance that the stadium will be built. More of a formality than anything else. And real grass better be in there. Nothing compares to the real stuff. No matter how advanced the synthetic thing is, it is still fake. Nothing like watching a true football game and seeing the different shades of the field after it was groomed as the ball is passed around.

Grass is great but Field Turf is the way to go! It is soft like grass but holds up much better for multi-useage. It is also heated so it won't freeze in cold weather. We put a small dome or bubble(as it is called) over it in the winter at Frank Clair Stadium and play year round on it. The same thing could be done in Toronto with it. The field could be rented out by the hour to help pay for the facility.

You are completely right. But I'm sure there's a zero chance they'll install real grass now that the synthetic stuff has improved so much. Sad, but reality...

The Argos bought a temporary FieldTurf type of surface and used it at Skydome yesterday. I don't think it looks all that bad. It looks more like grass than the astroturf. They also kept the roof open for the game, something they haven't been doing very much for Argo games in recent years.

Yeah, when I first tuned in to the game, it sure as heck didn't look like they were playing in SkyDome. That's not a bad thing at all.
It'll be even better when they get the heck outta there.

SkyDome has a real grass surface for soccer this weekend only. That makes three different surfaces in less than ten days there, with the old hard artificial turf for the Blue Jays, and the new Field Turf type of stuff for the Argos.
