Is it my imagination....or will Tarver get his ass handed to him again by Jones.

This light - heavyweight rematch will be the on the 15th.
The last time they fought in November, Jones won on a decision. (unanimous if I might add) . Unusual for Roy Jones, considering he usually beats the other fighters like they owed him money.

But now.......

There is a good chance Tarver will get beat like a rented mule. Tarver was quoted as saying "Roy! bring your ass - and bring my belt!".
Considering Tarver has never come close to beating Jones - this should be a good old fashioned whooping.

A rested Jones would make for a better outing than the one last November. He dropped 25 lbs to fight Tarver (from Heavy to light heavy weight) plus he had to lose 12 lbs 4 days before the weigh in.
Jones at 49 - 1 (the 1 being an arguable decision) is agreed upon a s one of the greatest pound per pound fighter of all time. Besides, an error in the first round scoring pushed for a draw. Had the error not been comitted it would have been Jones in a decision and not a draw.
With any luck, Jones will be true to form. I hope the fight goes the distance.....although, Tarver called for a 6th round finish.

healer,

Did you even watch these fights you're talking about?

First you claim that Tarver never came close to beating Jones, when in reality, the first fight was very close and many people consider Antonio did enough to win, based on the amount of punishment he did to Jones in the corners and on the ropes.

His only loss was not a questionable decision, it was a DQ for hitting Montell Griffin while he was down.

In a sense boxing is like politics.

For Tarver to claim any victory over the incumbent, he has to knock him out. Although some might argue that Jones was hurt (much more so than in the past - this time he actually got cut and swelled up) in the November fight. Tarver still would have had to knock him out.

Hopefully Tarver will put on a good show - IMO that isn't likely.

It's one thing to take the champ to the limit.....it's another to keep talking smack.....it'll be worse if he couldn't back it up.

Healer,

How many Roy Jones fights have you actually seen?

It sounds like you're making it up as you go along.

In your initial post you say how Jones handed Tarver his ass the first time they fought, and now you are back tracking by saying that the first fight was close and that Tarver basically has to knock Jones out in order to win.

Tarver was the champ when the first fought, so shouldn't it have been vice versa? I know that between Jones and Tarver that Jones is the one bringing in all the revenue for the fight, but based on your logic shouldn't Jones have been the one to score the knockout to secure a win?

I'm still waiting for you to talk about this controversial decision loss you mentioned in your first post?

In reference to who the champ is -

In this particular discussion, I refer to Jones as the champ. At the onset of the Tarver / Jones fight, Jones was the WBA Heavyweight champion. He beat Ruiz for this belt. Tarver was the light heavyweight champ. In this case the heavyweight belt carries more weight.

The loss charged to Jones in the 97 Griffin fight was debatable.
- The ref was slow to come in after the knockdown.
- Griffin was on one knee when the blow was delivered - like hockey, you finish the check til you hear a whistle. Unless the ref comes in you keep swinging.
- Griffin was offered a 5 minute delay to compose himself - he declined, Jones was charged with a late punch and a loss.

Moving up 4 months later....Jones regained the WBC light heavyweight belt by taking Griffin apart in 2:40. 20 seconds into the first round Jones TAGGED Griffin and the only thing that kept him up was the ropes. And at 2:20 of the first round Griffin was Ko'd.

IMO between Jones and Tarver - I will still refer to Jones as the champ -bigger belt and on Saturday, hopefully will be proven a better fighter.

Jones does a lot of dancing in the ring. He's got a tendancy of keeping his hands down and clowning around in the ring. But the one fight in recent history where Jones was actually mad (the Griffin fight) proved to be quite the display of combination power punches and delivery.

It should be interesting to see how Jones comes out for this fight.
Tarver has already crowned himself as the peoples champ, I guess in 48 hours or so; we'll see.

How long did it take you to look all that up?

What are your thoughts on Eric Harding?

I've only seen Harding twice - once was in highlights with Khalid Jones.
Actually the only reasaon that stood out was that Khalid Jones killed someone earlier that year.
Harding actually had a great showing against Jones - The TKO was too bad. I think it would have been a much better fight if it wasn't for the bicep tear.

Jones has slowed down since the Johnson fight in 99. The Johnson fight and Telesco went the distance, Hall and Harding went to teh late rounds.

I'm a bigger fan of the lighter weight divisions - Pacquiao and Marquez, Barrera, Ayala and even Tapia and Bones Adams. I didn't evev notice Jones until he fought Toney ten years ago.

The next time I remember seeing Jones was the fight against the Pazmanian devil. I usually lose interest in fighters once they move up past super middleweight / light heavyweight.

Wow.

I apologize for thinking you're just some casual fan who pretends he knows what he's talking about.

The Jones/Vinny Pazienza fight is my favorite Jones fight. I'll never forget the final knock down in that fight when Roy shrugged his shoulders, calmly walked up to a dazed Paz and unleashed one of the most beautiful uppercuts anyone will ever see.

You say that you lose interest in fighters when they move beyond super middle weight or light heavy.Just out of curiosity what is your fave division and who are some of your fave fighters?

The first Taver-Jones fight was very close. Taver thought he had won it, as did some others. I thought Jones won but barely. Taver exposed Jones & did some damage to him. Jones is now 34 & all the gaining & losing weight has slowed him a tad. He was awesome as a middleweight. I remember him knocking out a guy(Virgil Hill I think) with a wicked abdominal punch. This should be a good fight!

You generally dont find regular fans of the pugilistic arts, but; I'm hoping for a good fight tonight.

For the last little while I've been following Pacquiao. It's kinda funny though, because he's an Asian fighter; he doesn't get a lot of press here in North America. And a huge part of his problem in fighting here, as most fighters from Asia have; is the travel.
Although that was a good fight with Marquez.

Paquiao is getting pretty popular. He's probably the most exciting fighter amongst the P4P fighters today. Had he emerged victorious (like HBO hoped he would have) he was all set to face Erik Morales in what would have been absolutely awesome.

Healer,

Do you have any fight tapes you'd like to trade? Seeing as we're in Canada and I dont have a dish, I basically cant watch any showtime fighters such as Kostya Tszyu, Ricky Hatton, Sharmba Mitchell, Joe Calzaghe and Acelino Freitas.

It almost looks like he'd have to fight again......maybe his age has caught up with him. His hands aren't what they used to be.

Although, maybe Jones can stay up in the heavyweights and try to catch one of the belts there.
