Although i didn't see it in this article. I did here on Sport News that Stafford was suspended as well for his involvement in this incident, and deservedly so, he was the first to start the stick swinging.

The various leagues always wrap up so quickly what punishment they are going to hand out to players that commit these type of offences. Yet the Vancouver Police Department took months of investigating the Bertuzzi/Moore incident before they come up with their desicion, and then they still haven't made public if they are going to prosecute Todd Bertuzzi.

Why it takes a huge department months to do what the AHL and NHL can do in a week is beyond me. Just thinking out loud. --- Kev

Actually he might play as early as next season in the NHL......
Bob Gainey hasn't decided yet.

I'd be shocked if Gainey subverted the authority of the AHL and let Perezhogin play. Shocked.
Perezhogin deserves every ounce of this suspension, and hopefully will be charged criminally soon.

Just wondering if Leaf fans would react like that if it was a top Leaf prospect......sorry Ranger, check your info, Gainey doesn't need approval from the AHL, but he will probably not try the NHL who's approval he would need....in any case Perezhogin is not ready...rumors in Mtl say Gainey will most likely try the IHF to make him play in Europe next year.

First, yeah, it WOULD be my opinion that if it were a Leaf the same should apply, so shove it.
I don't have to check my info - I wasn't saying he COULDN'T dress Perezhogin, just that it would be insulting to the authority of the AHL.
Check you own info.
Try not to be too much of a homer, pal.
Oh, and if criminal charges are levelled, he won't be able to play in Europe either - VISA problems and all that.
I think Gainey has more class than you do, and won't come near Perezhogin with a ten foot pole.

If he's charged criminally, and leaves to play in Kazakhstan, he might not be allowed back in. Read up, dude.
Oh, and it's not entirely in Gainey's hands, moron. He has to ask PERMISSION from the NHL for Perezhogin to play. At the same time, the AHL might ask the NHL to honour the suspension.
Case closed.
Buy a clue.
Maudit francais! Va foutre, cochon! Idiot!
Hey, translate this into french, asswipe - IGNORE!

NHL already has said that they can't do anything to stop him from playing (CBA issues). Also I don't see any problems with his VISA. Heatley is facing far more serious charges and was allowed to travel to Prauge to play for Canada.

Yes, the NHL certainly can. They can uphold the suspension. The league is fully within its rights to uphold the suspension of a player in ANY outside league. They review all of these on a case by case basis. Montreal, if they wanted to add him to their roster next year, must petition the NHL. Even the IIHF must clear him to play next year.

The VISA issue will come up with CONVICTION, not merely charges. If Perezhogin is convicted, he WILL have problems crossing borders and obtaining visas.

Both of these are issues that Perezhogin will have to deal with, fortunately.

Truely an unfortunate incident. The kid is a decent prospect and had no prior major penalties in the AHL this season, let alone criminal charges.
While the act is totally indefensible and inexcusable, the length of suspension is was also impacted by the timing. Pro-hockey is sending a message and it is far easier to make this relatively unknown kid the example than a guy like Bertuzzi.
IIHF have cleared him to play in Europe. As pointed out, in pro sports there are a number of players who have been convicted of more serious crimes. A visa and border crossing will not be an issue for him so long as he is part of an NHL/AHL team. As an individual, he may have more difficulty.

That's not entirely true, pistol, as Bob Probert had to discover.
It depends upon the outcome of the legal proceedings.

Ranger as you will recall, Probert not only had a lengthy history on and off the ice, drug possession/trafficking charges are a much different situation especially when you factor he was playing in a border city at the time of the offense. Don Murdoch went through similar situation with no visa complications.

What I'm saying, pistol, is that his ability to cross borders and play in countries may be impaired. You don't know what those folks are going to say. It's not a certainty that he'll be able to come back and play. Right?

I think it is. I can think of no one in any major sport being banned from travelling and competing for a prolonged period? Particularly in North America. Not only will the Habs be fighting for this guy, so to will the NHL and the backing of the other leagues. This could been Domi, Roger Clemens (after hitting someone) or one of the many NFL/NBA guys convicted of various crimes.
Perezhogin is somewhat more vulnerable because of his ancestry. If he were a Canadian or American this discussion wouldn't be happening.

I've already cited Probert as an example of someone who had convictions on his record and it impaired his ability to play professional sports.

Your examples are poor - Perezhogin may be convicted of aggravated assault, or something similar - NOTHING like what any of those guys were convicted of - a VERY serious crime. We just don't know yet.

Probert wasn't European, either.

Time will tell. Anybody who thinks Perezhogin's play in the NHL next year is a given may be in for a rude awakening. Believe what you want.

Maybe we're talking about two different things? He will not play in the NHL next year, if there is a next year. He isn't ready and Gainey knows this. He'll play in Europe. The IIHF has already agreed.
I talking long term. 2-3 years, he will play in the NHL.
