Playa Del Carmen Q.R.
Calvin Ripken Jr - Baltimore Orioles
George Herman Ruth - New York Yankees
Pete Rose - Cincinnati Reds

Not in any particular order, regardless of their off feild "activities" and taking into account whatever intangibles you'd like to include.

Ruth....there's not even a close second, IMHO.

I agree with Ruth.
Ripken and Rose aren't even close. Damn fine ballplayers, but not in Ruth's league.
I LOVE a good baseball yak, though. :)

Babe couldn't run.
Rose couldn't hit with power.

Babe ran PLENTY when he was young.
How much would YOU run when you were socking 50 homers a year? LOL He definitely let himself go a bit towards the end of his career, and he probably lost his real fire for playing even earlier than that. Which makes his accomplishments all the more incredible.
Mickey Mantle and Joey D were great. Still not in Ruth's league, though.

When you look at all five tools (throwing arm, speed, hit for average, hit for power and defense), Willie Mays was the absolute best. Babe Ruth could hit and had a great arm but not much speed. Pete Rose never hit for power.

Yeah, but Ruth hit for average and power SO MUCH BETTER than everyone else ...
He probably would have been a Hall of Famer JUST AS A PITCHER if he hadn't moved to the outfield.
He was nutty good. Sorta like his chocolate bar. ;)
(Does it have nuts??)

Mays was the best I ever saw, but Ranger is dead on about Ruth's pitching. Clemente was my favorite all time player along with the Mick. Hate the Yankees, love the Mick. :)

Yeah, actually, Barry's obviously the best player in baseball history.
Just ask him.
He's a great player - one of the ten best of all time, almost certainly. We'll see how his career stacks up when he's all done.

You are right, Babe Ruth was a 20-game winner as a pitcher before he moved to the outfield.

Ted Williams was IMO the best hitter from an average perspective.
The last .400 hitter

Shoeless Joe? Terribly overrated. And he certainly deserved what he got - a lifetime ban. Don't believe the hype.

Babe Ruth

The only knock of the Babe is he played against white players only. No night games. Limited travel as there were no teams on the left coast at the time. But, there is no arguing the numbers.
Mays came to the majors at a time when blacks were few in number. The Giants moved to San Francisco early in his caeer and he spent many seasons playing at Candlestick where is was more often than not cold and windy, hurtinghis power numbers.
Clearly the best base runner and defensive player of baseball elite.

Shoeless Joe stat's and the case for him not fixing the 1919 World Series.

.356 career batting average is 3rd all time. Puts him in the Hall if you believe he is innocent. If you believe he is guilty then he and the absolute prick Rose stay out forever.

Do the numbers lie? :)
