Incidents like today puts things in perspective.
Sometimes reporters use words like courage, battling, playing through adversity to describe events in sports.

But, today; these words carry a special meaning. Let us honor an athlete who believed and acted towards this belief. A man compelled by what he thought was right and turned his back on a lucrative pro sports career and his young family.

Somehow pro sports seem belittled by true courage, real comittment and sacrifice beyond imagination.

Hear hear.
Those words all seem very hollow when used to describe events in the sporting world.
As they are, in fact.

When I think of the word "hero", too often it is used for someone who was merely doing his/her job, or someone that receives praise for merely setting a good example.

In the case of Pat Tillman, he went above and beyond what one might expect out of a patriotic citizen. The story is bigger than merely giving up a three-year, $3.6 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the Army in May 2002 in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

In 2001, he turned down a $9 million, five-year offer sheet from the Super Bowl champions, the St. Louis Rams, out of loyalty to the Cardinals. In todays world of selfish superstars, this is unheard of... taking less money to stay with a wretched losing team out of loyalty, because the Cardinals took a chance on a slow, small undersized defensive player.

Furthermore, Tillman denied requests for media coverage of his basic training and ultimate deployments. Army officials said at the time that he wanted no special treatment or attention but wanted to be treated just like any other enlisted soldier doing his duty. No press conferences, no attempt to capitalize on his actions, no movie of the week, no interviews.

"He is a hero,” said Michael Bidwill, vice president of the Cardinals. “He was a brave man. There are very few people who have the courage to do what he did, the courage to walk away from a professional sports career and make the ultimate sacrifice.”

In this case I agree. He is a hero. To me, and to millions of other Americans who never would have made the sacrifice he did for his country, he is the example of what a man should be. God Bless him and his family.
