Comments like this in professional sports should never be made. I'm not saying that because I dislike Alfredsson (which I do, quite heavily I might add), but more to do with the fact regarding the amount of pressure that this puts on Ottawa. It also provides a major motivating factor for a very close-knit team group like the Leafs to rally around as use as a revenge point if you will.

Stuff like this will only make the Red-headed Stepchild even more hated after the series concludes and the Leafs walk out of Ottawa with a decisive game six victory to make it four straight against the Sens!

What is he supposed to say? I guarantee a loss in game 6? We'll try a little harder? It's do or die time. Of course he's going to be positive.

The Leafs were down 3-2 to the Sens, and 2-0 in the first do or die game not too long ago. They went on to win the series. It ain't over until it's over. The Sens have had so many heartbreaks the last 8 years you'd think the dice will roll their way sooner or later. The game started off like a LONG staring match. For Smolinski to score the game breaker...it's got to hurt.

Some of its luck but also luck of the draw with the officials. There are times when you think the officials have been told to pay closer attention to the leafs. Last night (officiating was pretty good) there were some iffy calls against them. The sens do something (like cross checking tucker in front of the net) then the leafs do the same thing and bam, they get penalized.

Don't forget alfredsdaughter also guaranteed they would win the cup, the truth will be in who moves on to the next round.

So far Alfredsson (top 10 in points in the League along with Hossa .... hehehe) has delivered on all his playoff predictions. Watch for Alfredsson and Hossa to fire a couple of howitzers into the back of the net next game .... hehehe ...... rack it !!!!!!

Goldenboy, you know my postings draw a lot of attention, thousands of views per week. Means everyone knows .... hehehe ... Keri ignored you .... and you're afraid to talk to strippers ..... too funny.

She IS cute, but I still don't understand why she snobs me. I'm a young guy and very approachable but it looks like I might have to be the one to initiate a conversation with her next time i'm in. ."

Johnny Wadd and all others that misinterpreted Alfredson's commments : I have heard the audio and watched the video of the comment and nowhere did he say 'guarantee'. Don't let the media mould your impressionable minds. Like BigBlack said "What's he supposed to say?". That comment was directed to the Ottawa fans and not he media in front of him, or the Leaf fans, nor the Leaf players. Let's turn the tables for a minute. If the Leafs were down 3 games to 2 (and it doesn't have to be against the Sens), what would lyou like to hear from your captain? Of course you want to hear your captain be confident and have some resolve in his voice. Or do you want to hear Sundin say "the series is over and were are throwing in the white flag"? Take the comment with some objective analysis and don't let the media mold your thoughts. The media is just trying to make a story out of nothing.

BTW please disregard anything Jim Rome has to say as it is totally meaningless.

i will have to second n_v's comment about Jim Rome, as a fellow fanatical Sens supporter this guy really annoys me, its the same material over and over, but then again look at his name sake, easily one of the most annoying tv and radio personalities anywhere in the world.

Wow, sheesh, Pansey is getting put on by his fellow sens' fans? nice to see you guys have class too!

I haven't watched the video or read the report but what I find when the leafs are down they all come out with "we have to dig down and do what has to be done". I think that's maybe the difference between the leafs and the sens: the leafs know the basic game of hockey is about heart, the grind, taking and giving hits, not making promises or statements".

And that's why I have been living in Toronto all my life bearing first hand witness to all those Stanley Cup parades down Yonge St. over the past 37 years.

If he can back it up then more power to him. Messier guaranteed game 6 against the Devils in the '94 and came through with a hat trick.

Namath guaranteed victory in Super Bowl III and came through.

People who make comments like that are under the gun but if they come through then they can become legends.

How do you figure it was a misinterpretation in the first place? Did I quote your buddy Alfie in the first place? You always take things out of context.
Okay let me rephrase the idiot's comments for you in other words: Alf said : A promise or an assurance, A pledge that something will be performed, completion, or existence of something. IS THAT BETTER FOR YOU?
Regardless, asside from a legend like Mark Messier who has made Cup promises before, Alf seems he can make the same assurance and puts added pressure on his team. You won't hear Mats say that he looks ahead to the next game or there after as a win or any leader like an Yzerman who would say these comments. Alf is an idiot and I can't wait to rub it in especially after the he made the biggest bonehead guarantee that the SENATURDS will win the Cup

There's being positive, and then there's what Alfie's doing - GUARANTEEING success.

Frankly, all these antics strike me as totally no class, as Nieuwendyk alluded to after the last game.

What's the point of it all? Is he going to refund Senator fans money if they don't win?

Talk is cheap, and all of Alfie's predictions are just hollow words. If we had a player like that on our team, I'd be hoping someone would have a word with him.

Alfie never gauranteed a game 6 win or a game 7 win. The media said that. He just said the Sens will be back for game 7 and win it. That is not a gaurantee though. And Leetch said (before Game 6) good on him to say that because he has to as the captain.

... If we had a player like that on our team, I'd be hoping someone would have a word with him.
If Toronto had someone on the team like him they would have won the cup. But Toronto has Sundin. A man twice the size of Krusty that plays like he is half his size, heart and passion. I guess fans like you are content with hearing PR prepared statements and leaders that are not bold and hungry enough.

n_v I beg to differ. Sundin is a strong, inspirational captain. The Leafs are loyal to him and their success in game 5 IMHO was in part inspired by Sundin being out. Sundin plays with a lot of passion. He's always dangerous against the Sens. He brings major jam, he's a marksman and has the ability to turn a game around on a dime. He's fiercely competitive.

Bottom line if the Leafs win this could be disaster for Alfie and the Sens. The Sens franchise and their fans are rather fragile when it comes to their ability to win in the playoffs, particularly against the Leafs.

John Muckler was interviewed prior to Game 6 and he admitted that the franchise needed to learn how to win. He believes that the perception around the league and with hockey fans is that the Sens need to get past some of these hurdles if they are going to be consistent contenders. The comments demonstrate that Alfie has faith in his teammates and the organization, but somethings are beyond his control.

I don't think Alfie has overpromised, but he has promised perfection when you think that he's claimed a cup victory for the Sens already this year. The fact that he's had to come out with additional guarentees just proves how fragile things are.

The Leafs fans have confidence (however misguided you believe they are) because they have 75 years of tradition and a few Cups (11 I believe) under their belts. They draw upon that when the going gets tough. What do the Sens draw upon when things get tough...past track record and outrageous unfulfilled promises and potential.

This is not intended to be smack, just an observation on organizational behaviour. You establish realistic goals and develop a track record of meeting those objectives. If you set unrealistic expectations (yes guarenteeing a Cup victory is urealistic) you can really damage your reputation and the psyche of your organization. Maybe when you've got a few rings on your fingers like Messier or Babe Ruth had it's not as much as a risk. A good leader should know when there's too much at stake and when to back away...not go double or nothing.

JR - I never said Sundin wasn't competitive. He just isn't enough IMHO.
