I got hit by a trojan virus tonight. Luckily, my antivirus software detected and got rid of it for me. However, I also discovered that I had a dialer installed on my computer as well. (1-900)

I deleted it from "Network Connections". Does this mean it is gone for good?? Also, am I liable for any calls the dialer may have made??

No you have not rid of it, you will find out next time you rebbot it will be back. Check your running process's and run Ad-aware, spybot, hijack this, they are all free programs. Also do an online scan at trendmicro

I just rebooted and checked. It's not there.

The program could be using stealth and you wouldnt see it. I had one of those stuck on my PC and it started dialing Timbuktu all by itself. Bell Canada wanted me to pay the bill and I told them to take a long hike on a short pier. That was the end of that!!

I did a scan for anything dialer exe. related and it came up clean. Should I reformat my hard drive to be on the safe side?? Also, if you were not the one dialing the number, it is really a circumstance beyond your control - that is, it dialed without your knowledge. Therefore, would not the phone company be willing to reverse the charges incurred in such a situation??

No, you see Bell Canada is a business and they will test you to see who will break first. At first they will press you to pay but if you dont give in then they will eventually agree to delete the charges. I dont think you need to reformat your hard drive but you may want to ask a PC expert.

I made sure to contact my local phone company and advise them of the situation. I also got them to initiate a block on 900 numbers - takes about 2 or 3 business days. I have it as an automatic payment on my credit card, so if anything funny shows up on the bill, can I get the credit card company to stop the charge from going through??

If you want to make sure you can always report your card stolen and then they will issue you a new Credit card with a new number which they cant automatically deduct from because it's not the same number. I did this once with my Cantel bill after they tried to charge me for calls to China that I never made. They're still pissed about that one.

Formatting is an Extreme step, you probably dont have to go that far.

Go through your task list get every name and do a search for the name on the internet, Make sure every service is accounted for, and you are sure that they are not parasites.

Make sure you have a software firewall, that restricts outbound traffic on a program by program basis. The one built into XP doesnt do outbound filtering - it sucks -. The firewall would have probably caught the dialer. Many free firewall available, ZoneAlarm, sygate, kerio to name the most popular free ones. there is no reason not to have a firewall, antivirus, and anti-spyware program on every computer.

Run Antivirus and anti-spyware religiously.
There are also free spyware guard programs. I hear they are good, but I have yet to install one to know for sure.

You SHOULD have a dialer.exe file (I scanned my HD for the file, it's there and I KNOW I don't have one of these third party things on my comp)

As others suggested, get a good Spyware program and do a scan before going and reformatting. Two I suggest
Spybot (go to www.download.com and search for it)
Spysweeper (go to www.es5.com, hit tools, then down to the bottom)

BOth are really good. Get em, update them, and then scan

By the way, how do you think you got the virus, by an e-mail? What was the subject. This could help all of us be wary.
