Hey guys and gals, came across this site through a friend, not really sure how many people here are into martial arts but this site seems to have a lot of information and other cool stuff that relates to martial arts. Site looks a little new though. Check it out

I Totally agree with you, I took martial arts for a while and agee that it is a "art". On that site there is a thread on "what makes a black belt" you should check it out some of the people have pretty interesting comments to make about it. Btw have any of you ever taken martial arts?

i have taken alot of Martial Arts and still do...but most of the techniques dont hold up in a realistic attack...whether it be by surprise, multiple attackers, armed attackers.

i suggest reading some of geoff thompson's material

the only problem i have with Gracie Jui-Jitsu or Jui-Jitsu/Grappling in general...is that it doesnt take into account multiples...ie. pulling a guy to the ground and grappling him in a bar leaves you wide open for one of his friends to kick your head in.

Not that it's a really big deal but when you register as a member for that site every 100th members is suppose to get a free t-shirt. Not to shabby just for registering, imho.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is definitely very effective. As far as staying on your feet and defending yourself, I think joint-locks and submission holds that military and police forces use are effective. I just don't know if you can properly apply a joint-lock or standing submission move on someone much bigger than you. In that case, fight dirty!!

I don't mean to brag, but have any of you guys ever knock someone out with just one punch?

I'm also the dirtiest player in the game, and have on occasion used beer bottles, chairs, chains, bats etc.

as well as kicks, punches etc. to the balls. Eye gouching, biting, shin kicks, and hair pulling.

Imagine if I owned a gun!! A lot more effective, with less wasted energy. Remember Terminator 2, when Arnold shot all those cops in the legs because he was programmed not to kill people? "They'll live!" Wicked!!!

like i said early pickup Jeoff Thompson's books he encourages all the above..if you life is on the line and you have to survive..(playing dirty is nothing new)....read his book The Bouncer..after being in hundreds of brutal and bloody fights...he became addicted to violence before he changed..read his experiences and you'll find you havent even played the game.

Street fighting is one thing, but you don't take martial arts with the intention to use it in a street fight. Martial arts should teach you to be disiplined and not have to get into a situation where you have to hurt someone. IMHO

Tradition Martial Arts are great for discipline, improving cordination, flexibility, attitude, respect etc...the only problem i have with it is if the person (black belt or beginner) develops a false sense of confidence in the techniques, katas, forms etc....avoidance is always the best decision.

If avoidance isn't possible, remember there is strength in numbers. Never go out alone. Always in groups. I used to go out with a few cars full of friends. Never had a problem. But a smaller group of four or five stand a better chance of being left unharmed as opposed to a single person against one or several opponents.

Not sure how many of you guys here are into UFC but a whole bunch of people from fightingspirit are going to checking out the fight this Friday at Sports Centre Café in Scarborough (2753 Eglinton Ave East), if you guys like UFC you should go. I think the fight starts at either 8 or 9.
