Thought a useful thread would be comments on some motel experiences in these cold winter months. It would be nice to know which are nice and warm and if there any to avoid for lack of proper heating and hot water.

Will start it off with 2:
Admiral Inn, 5320 Ferry St.
AA-1 Motel, on Lundys Lane right across from the Tropix Grill near Montrose.

Both were nice clean and plenty of heat & hot water, and off season rates of $30-40.

Mainly interested in the ones to avoid. A cold room can really waste time and ruin the fun.

Off Season

Two questions:

1. For the two already mentioned - were you required to show ID. Many consider that "the ultimate turn-off."

2. What's a good "off season" rate for a jacuzzi room??

I have only stayed at the Renassaince by the falls. I have booked it on Priceline.com for anywhere from $34 - $55 US a night - one time I got a partial fallsview but every other time I had a city view. I have gotten a king size bed 4 out of 5 times. I nabbed the $55 price right in the middle of tourist season. Never have had trouble having an SP come up to visit, usually the back door is open late (it says it will be locked at 11:00PM but I have walked though it without a key at 2:00AM). Just make sure you tell your SP which elevator to use, because there are 2 elevators, each will take you to a different set of floors - one elevator is kinda tricky to get to from the back lobby (have to walk through a hard to find hallway). Just be warned, if you book on Priceline you'll probably have to pay the parking which is $12CAN a day. A few times they have let it slide, other times they told me off when I asked "why are you charging me for parking this time but you didn't last time." They are stingy with exchanging currency, but there's a place right down the street on Lundy if you're not going to be in the casino. I have called agencies from the hotel room phone - so as far as I know, phone numbers to popular agencies are not blocked.

I have been tempted to stay somewhere on Lundy's Lane closer to Seductions, and possibly even finding a hotel where some of the traveling dancers stay at, but when you can stay in a 3-star/4-star (on some boards) for the same price, why not?!?!?!

I have used the Arkona and the Kingsway in the past due to the no questions asked, no id situation (don't want a paper trail for certain people to find out) I had been told that the Arkona can be cold in the winter time especially in certain rooms, so i had avoided that during the colder months. I have been satisfied with the Kingsway but they have a heater on the wall that sometime takes a while to heat up and the water is cold for quite a while before it gets hot. If anyone else has any input about this it would be greatly apppreciated.

The two mentioned required no show of ID, although filling out a card was necessary. On the good side though, both motel guys didn't care what you put on the card.

Have no info on jacuzzi rates.

Booked at the 3 Diamonds across from the Downer last week. ID for checkin, $40 PLUS another $7 tax. Room was ice cold, never got anyway near warm, I ran the shower to let steam into room, set off smoke alarm. Crappy TV, you want adult channel? another $7. You want phone! It has to be turned on. Not a repeat, just another sign from above to hibernate until spring.

I normally go for the Ramada Suites or Ramada Coral, but there is that paper trail for those worried about that. Rates are usually standard, just book online CAD$75 suites/CAD$60 coral. I was quoted $110or $120 for a jacuzzi suite.

I stayed in the triple diamond last summer and told the guy not to turn the phone on because I had a cell phone and wouldn't use it and he turned it on anyways. When I checked out he told me I had made a pile of calls when I wasn't even in my room and charged me $5 for them. I paid it cause it wasn't worth arguing over but will stay somewhere else next time I'm in town.

Also....you might try the Best Inn.
Several dancers normally reside there and the renovated side is clean and pleasant. I've been staying there with my groups and functions since '96 though changed owners a few years back.
As for the phone....good luck. $5.00 is a small price to pay to stay anonymous...tho I agree it seems like a scam.

Trust me though and take a cab back and forth from the SC's.

Motels vs Hotels

I guess if you don't want the paper trail you are limited to the sleezier motels along Lundy's Lane where the rooms are less than perfect and sometimes come with little heat. I've used the Arkona and Kingsway and have paid $35-45 CA range. The rooms were OK during the summer but I haven't been there since the cold weather hit.

There are plently of quality hotels with nice rooms such as the Park Plaza Hotel where you can get a room for $38 US/$49 CA. Unfortunately, there's that paper trail.

I like the following link:

http://www.infoniagara.com/hotels_and_motels/index.html

I've used my credit card when checking in but have paid cash for the room upon departure. I've never had anything appear on my statements. Is this what we are talking about as a paper trail?

Thundergod would you care to tell us what happened causing you to go the cab route?

BTW another motel recommended by a friend is, Overnight Inn, 7558 Lundys' Lane @ Montrose. Haven't tried it yet but was told it's OK.

Several years some groups thought it just a jaunt to walk to the Sundowner /Seductions from the Best Inn. After a day of golf and cocktails.....its too far to manage safely. Just call a cab or groups of cabs for our particular group and go that way...then the same when you leave...except for the late night cruise to the Saucer drive in for late night starch intake!.

If you are talking about the former Park Plaza on Lundy's Lane that is now the Rodeway, that is the worst place I have stay ANYWHERE!

Poor service and not responsive at all. Beware.

Kingsway?

Where is this place exactly? I was looking for it a few nights ago, but I was short of time & settled for Niagara Inn (on LL just West of the power canal) which had a sign stating warm rooms and low rates. $45 and the room was a nice temp on a frigid night. The room was small and positively Spartan, though - but no ID hassles was a big plus and it will do in a pinch. The dancer I was with said she lived there years ago, apparently with a somewhat larger room.

che?

Rodeway? Is that the newer looking one near Montrose, and what was wrong?

Another useful link I came across that lists quite a few motel/hotels is:

www.aroundnaboutniagara.com/index.html

Just go to the city/town your interested in then scroll down to accommodations. List looks very complete.

Let's see...
No maid service, no towels, management did not even try to solve the problems. The building looks nice but the walls in the "new" building are paper thin and the rest of the property is just like most of the other cheap places on Lundy's Lane. The place is "Rodeway" now because the management would not even address the problems when Park Plaza management contacted them.
