T'was the night before Christmas...

T'was the night before Christmas,
he lived all alone,
in a one bedroom house,
made of plaster and stone.

I had come down the chimney,
with presents to give,
and to see just who,
in this home did live.

I looked all about,
a strange sight I did see,
no tinsel, no presents,
not even a tree.

No stocking by the mantle,
just boots filled with sand,
on the wall hung pictures,
of far distant lands.

With medals and badges,
awards of all kinds,
a sober thought,
came through my mind.

For this house was different,
it was dark and dreary,
I found the home of a soldier,
once I could see clearly.

The soldier lay sleeping,
silent, alone,
curled up on the floor,
in this one bedroom home.

The face was so gentle,
the room in such disorder,
not how I pictured,
a Canadian soldier.

Was this the hero,
of whom i'd just read?,
curled up on a poncho,
the floor for a bed?

I realized the families,
that I saw this night,
owed their lives to these soldiers,
who were willing to fight.

Soon round the world,
the children would play,
and grownups would celebrate,
a bright Christmas day.

They all enjoyed freedom,
each month of the year,
because of the soldiers,
like the one lying here.

I couldn't help wonder,
how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas eve,
in a land far from home.

The very thought brought,
a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees,
and started to cry.

The soldier awakened,
and I heard a rough voice,
"Santa, don't cry,
this life is my choice.

I fight for freedom,
I don't ask for more,
my life is my God,
my country, my corps."

The soldier rolled over,
and drifted to sleep,
I couldn't control it,
I continued to weep.

I kept watch for hours,
so silent and still,
and we both shivered,
from the cold night's chill.

I didn't want to leave,
on that cold, dark night,
this guardian of honor,
so willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over,
with a voice, soft and pure,
whispered, "carry on santa,
it's Christmas day, all is secure."

One look at my watch,
and I knew he was right,
"Merry Christmas my friend,
and to all a good night."

I think Jack Nicholson said it best in A Few Good Men
Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? ... And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand at post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Dragging in Hollywood dialogue to support a sentimentalisation of the military, well yeah, I guess I just can't take that truth. Hey, maybe I'd prefer that someone pissed in my cornflakes!

And now, like some old soldier, I'll just fade away... BLAAAAAAH!

By the way, isn't it usually Sheik who posts these heart-warming, tear-jerking, sorts of things. I thought it was in his job description! :)

P.S. Didn't fade away for long, did I?

What's biting your butt? Dog ate your Christmas pudding? Why couldn't you have just ignored the post if it was that unappealing to you? Are you so miserable that you have to suck any pleasntness you find out of this season?

Man, and I though I was an old grouch!

Ole dad

Goober--well done, I too like Vanessa have heard my dad talk about this --and to me it hit home. Thank God for the men who fought for our freedom-we always seem to forget them at this time.

Thank you...

It is very sentimental... Thank you Goob for reminding us that we are very fortunate... and jwm... it is because of these men, you can speak your mind... remember freedom comes with a cost...

I wonder, are you willing to pay it?

Everybody's Right

Its an unwinnable argument. Both sides are right. Oversentimentalization (is that a word?) of the military as JWMORRICE pointed out is a little bit Hollywood. I have to confess that nowadays, when the concept of defending liberty is generally gushing out of people like Bush's mouth as he justifies his blatant lies and aggressions...well, its hard to remember that at other times in the cycle soldiers were genuinely fighting and dying to preserve our way of life.

the unfortunate truth is that right now, soldiers , young men..are far from home, alone and dying and all they are dying for is to secure lucrative contract for Haliburton and other corps that don't give a squat about them. For that reason, the poem is both sad and touching on more than one level.

My totally subjective two cents...as usual....

Hmm, 'guardian of honour', 'thin blue line', 'blackboard jungle', yada, yada, yada. <wipes away the tears....of laughter> The cliches can just keep on coming. Maybe there's one for every damn profession except garbage men and strippers. Well here's a bloody big humbug to all that horse sh*t!

Oh, except for strippers: 'the thin pink thong'. I like strippers. :)

Maybe not Goober, but there was a hell of a lot of sentimentalisation! Maybe I'm the first line of defence against fascism. :)

Haven't changed a bit, huh VVV ?

You'll have to excuse my friend. He has an aversion to such poetry, if you will.

Some people will just never understand that the single most important thing in the world - FREEDOM - is not handed to you on a silver platter... You must EARN IT. That means that sometimes the ultimate price must be paid, and I am thankfull for all those willing to pick up a weapon and pay that price.
