Back in the 1980s it was very prestigious to have a Sony Trinitron TV set. Almost a status symbol. In the early 1990s as well, but by the mid 1990s not so much, and yes, for the past 10 years Sony TVs are not a prestige product. Part of the problem is Sony made great tube TVs, but nobody buys tube TVs anymore (and Sony no longer makes them). What Sony does make is nothing special compared to Sharp, Panasonic and Samsung. Nothing wrong with Sony flatscreen TVs, but nothing great about them either. In the 1980s one paid more (a premium) for a Sony Trinitron than other makes of TV of the same tube size for the better picture and brand status. If today they have no better picture or status, is it any wonder their TV division doesn't make money?
