Old Irish proverb: "Too cleaver by half." That fits Sonys to a tee. They thought they were being cleaver and shot themselves in the nuts. The bad ship Sonys is going down. Serves them right for thinking the masses were dumb enough to buy overpriced Sonys products where only Sonys accesories work. Remember the Memory Stick:mad:?

Cleaver:

While a cleaver can indeed cut a thing in half, not sure what you're trying to say with "too cleaver by half". "Two halves by a cleaver" would make more sense.

Two halves by a cleaver:

How fast is SONY going down? Is it just the electronics or the whole company? Will they spin off the music division? How about some details dude.

The Beta video system, the Elcassette audio system, etc. They had to team up with Philips to share in the CD and DVD wave.

They had this stupid idea of overpricing their products and then only overpriced Sony accessories would work on their products. I seem to remember that only an overpriced Sony HDMI cable would work with a Sony camcorder.

That stupid idea has been implemented a lot better by Apple LOL.

Something that always bothered me about SONY is that they'd sell you a computer with their own brand of cd burner, a music CD by an artist on their label, and a blank CD-rom...but it was technically illegal (in the USA at least) to burn that music onto one of their blank cd-roms using their computer equipment. :frusty:

Wow, $6.4 billion and fourth straight year of losses , yeah tough to survive that!

Sony announces 10,000 job cuts:mad:. Apparently, their TV division haven't turned a profit in 300 years.
Sony has a new guy in the top job who was responsible for the more profitable ideas/products when he was in a lower position. Hopefully he has some good ideas around the future of TVs before Apple corners that market. Until I see some new ideas from this firm I consider it a dog with fleas

Back in the 1980s it was very prestigious to have a Sony Trinitron TV set. Almost a status symbol. In the early 1990s as well, but by the mid 1990s not so much, and yes, for the past 10 years Sony TVs are not a prestige product. Part of the problem is Sony made great tube TVs, but nobody buys tube TVs anymore (and Sony no longer makes them). What Sony does make is nothing special compared to Sharp, Panasonic and Samsung. Nothing wrong with Sony flatscreen TVs, but nothing great about them either. In the 1980s one paid more (a premium) for a Sony Trinitron than other makes of TV of the same tube size for the better picture and brand status. If today they have no better picture or status, is it any wonder their TV division doesn't make money?

Sony used to make quality products but they stopped doing that over a decade ago. You can't sell forever on name brand only.
