So, the electric car is here. There is the GM volt. It won't sell. I'm not surprised. It cost over 40K. The govt will give a subsidy for it, I think 7K, but even then they won't sell. Also, the Nissan Leaf is available. I don't know how it's selling or how expensive it is.

However, did you know there used to a company in california that would convert cars to electric? It was called left coast conversions. I think it started at 17K, with the least expensive batteries, and a common car.

The same industry could be started in canada. It's not too difficult to convert a car to electric. There are books and many web sites on it. People are doing it all over the world.

This company could possibly get a profit of about 5K off of each car (I'm just guessing), or market another way. The other way would be to market to the high end only. Take a car, make the outside look unique and convert it to electric, and make the guts underhood look like a work of art. Rich people go nuts over stuff like this. The profit margin on something like this could be anywhere from 20K to 50K.

I once emailed factory five racing in the USA about having an electric option for their kit cars, and they didn't go for it, however they said some of their customers have done this on their own.

Well, since you are clearly an unemployed engineer, and seem knowledgeable and interested in the idea.. and it sounds like you know a lot of other unemployed engineers, maybe you could find some money for financing or subsidies from the government. Then you and your buddies could stop being unemployed and you wouldn't have to keep posting your million dollar ideas.

Of course.. if you did any of this, you wouldn't be able to post your million dollar ideas anymore. And you'd become the manager that in your previous thread you mocked...

Have fun!

I don't get the why natural gas powered vehicles have all but disappeared.
- it's cleaner than gasoline
- it's abundant and dirt cheap now and for a while to come
- the infrastructure for delivery is in many homes
- conversion is not that daunting

I've been wondering the same thing. At least they have had some exposure and for whatever reason (likely lack of Gov. support) never took off.

I think that whole idea blew up.

There is no public infrastructure to refuel - there are like 4 stations in the GTA, 1 in Chatham and 2 in Niagara region....what to do if travelling in Ottawa/Muskoka for a couple of weeks?

Works well for Transit (buses) and Taxis etc where they can have a private refuelling station in their area.

In a similar vein, there was a strong market for LPG in Australia (even 30 years ago) - car conversion kit was around $1,000 and you had the tank in the back (lost some crgo space), but people also tend to travel long distances there and the price was about 1/3 the gas price even then...you just needed to switch back to gas soay once per week to keep rings etc libricated properly and could switch between the two systems.

There is a currently a conversion program being run by the Gov't: $2k or so to buy a new vehicle with LPG and about $1k to convert an existing over.

Here's a quote from the Shell Australia site...

Shell has always brought to the market a product that is safe and of high quality with exceptional service synonymous with Shell products and has been selling automotive LPG for over 30 years.

Shell AutoGas is the smart alternative. Whether you commute long distances or you’re on the road a lot, Shell AutoGas is an economical way to run your vehicle. Not only can you lower your fuel costs, the cleaner emissions of LPG will also mean you're doing your bit for the environment.

In Australia alone, more than 615,000 cars operate on autogas, filling up from more than 3,200 refuelling points.

Same thing with hybrids, they won't sell. Not only do we have to worry about the initial cost upfront but also the repair cost for any of these so called newer technology are expansive.

If you want to go green. Buy a horse.

I think it needs to be converted to LNG to be safe. At that point it has to be trucked in special trucks that are capable of keeping it cold at cryogenic tempetures
which consumes energy. that also applies to point of distribution and in the car. It also doesn,t hold as much energy as gasoline in equal amounts there for the
tanks must be much larger....just not as good
