can any one explain to me what a numbered company is all about? they always seem to be mentioned in a nefarious way, yet they are legal and a part of business. what gives?

All incorporated entities in Ontario and elsewhere are numbered companies. The Ontario government assigns a number to you such as 1555555 Ontario Inc. This is your identifying number for income tax and other filing purposes. For those who are more adventurous, one can spend an extra few bucks to name your company, pending a name search to prevent the same or similar names from being used. Those who place evil connotations on to things as benign as a numbered company, which is merely a company without an operating name, are generally those who oppose any kind of business or enterprise.
But just to be clear; nothing stops the operator of a numbered company from doing business and operating with that number as their name. Except maybe the cost of all the misdirected communication. "OH, two nines a six then another nine, sorry. I'll write another cheque and get it in the mail right away".
