Hey everyone,

I'm just getting my feet wet with a couple of CMSystems for a new client, and I'm looking for a guinea pig who will let me design a website for him/her. I don't want any money for my labour or design, but you'll need to provide content. I can edit (copy and photos), but prefer not to write original material.

The site will be built using either Wordpress or Joomla (if you care to know), and will be handed over to you in its entirety on completion. You only have to pay for hosting and domain name. If you already have a host, I can work with that, or you can use my site at no charge for a year (I know, sounds too good to be true).

No catch or gimmicks. Free website build. The only condition is that you accept whatever technology I use in the build. Oh, and you have to let me work at my own pace since I will be testing and documenting as I go.

PM me for more details.

Chris.

I might take you up on that, I just set up my homepage the other day but haven't had time to work on it yet. My question to you is how do I know I can trust you, you only have 22 posts so I'm worried about handing my domain site info to you.

Get them to design the site and host on a free hosting site or a sub directory on their own site, then give you files to upload yourself. That will avoid all security issues for you.

I am all for finding volunteers and giving free service as that is what I have done in the recent past to build my portfolio, but if I was offering this as myself personally, I would design on my own hosting server, then turn the files over.

Also, since the technology being used may not {doubtful, but possible} be available to you, you may want to be sure that you can even accept this type of deal, and that you know how to use the technology yourself after the deal is complete.

BTW - Joomla is fully available and freely installed with hosting companies such as Godaddy. However personally I have found that writing clean proper code yourself for designing a site it usually better. Such as proper HTML with clean CSS coding for styling.

A client can simply use a text editor like note-pad if need be to make minor update changes if it is all designed right. If they know a little HTML themselves, then even more major changes can be made as well. But everyone wants a fancy interface to work on. The wave of the future I guess. LOL

Ok, I've received a little bit of interest, and I have one guinea pig for Joomla. I still need a Wordpress guinea pig. Let me offer some more information.

How do you know you can trust me? I guess you don't know for sure, and there is little I can do to assure you of that with a few words. As offered initially, I can work on your own provided site, or I can build on my site and hand all files over to you on completion. You decide what works for you.

The technology used is Wordpress or Joomla. Both are free, open source, and user friendly content management systems. My specialty is commercial custom built websites, but I am finding more and more clients are looking for something that they can manage themselves. I have a small client with an upcoming site upgrade that has retained me to produce a CMS site for them. You are my guinea pig in this regard. Your site will enable me to proof my tools and design as I have limited experience with commercial applications of WP and/or Joomla!.

If you are not happy at any phase of the project, I will stop work immediately and hand all files back over to you. There is nothing proprietary or sensitive except whatever you provide to me, so you control the flow and sensitivity of the information I work with.

My only conditions are as stated in my original post.

Femme Fatale makes some good points, and the advice is sound, but I cannot work with a limitation of handing files back and forth for upload...it's too time consuming as multiple changes are often required in a short amount of time. If you are not comfortable with the concept of having me manage the uploads, or cannot accept building on my site, I'm afraid that this deal is not for you.

Further, if you are not familiar with Wordpress or Joomla!, I won't be offering much in the way of support when we're done. There are plenty of resources available on the web for learning these simple tools, and I am not planning on re-writing the book on either of them. I can answer some simple questions for you, and certainly help you get started, but this is not a lifetime support contract...lol. You will get use of my site for a year though.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

I am sorry to be a pain here, but "use for a year" Is this because that is all you have hosted for? What about transfer at the end of that year.

I only ask because I too offer free services for sample work however, I just use it as samples for my portfolio. I still treat each as if they were a paying customer and they receive all that a paying client would.

So it is your site? Their site? Your site for a year and "hopefully" they can take it offer. If a lady is marketing herself and that site for a year, bring traffic, paid advertising and then left without a site after that year, well then I got to ask - how much help was that to her?

I guess since you have some candidates these questions really don't need to be answered but it may help others getting freebee service in the future.

I am sorry to be a pain here, but "use for a year" Is this because that is all you have hosted for? What about transfer at the end of that year.

As I said in my original post, "The site will be built using either Wordpress or Joomla (if you care to know), and will be handed over to you in its entirety on completion." The site I would provide would be a temporary holding place until the client could secure his or her own domain and host. He or she would have a full year to do that. I am not in the hosting business, I build and support websites.

I only ask because I too offer free services for sample work however, I just use it as samples for my portfolio. I still treat each as if they were a paying customer and they receive all that a paying client would.

You photograph clients for free, let them keep the photos and use those photos in your own portfolio. Much like I build a website for free, let the clients keep the site files, and use what I've learned to build other websites to enhance my portfolio.

So it is your site? Yes. Their site? My domain name and host, their files that I've built for free. Your site for a year? Their site for up to a year...they can take the files immediately on completion and upload to their own site. I'm not in the hosting business. and "hopefully" they can take it offer. My site is not for sale or transfer...it's a temporary holding site. If they can't take the files in a year, they would just be deleted. If a lady is marketing herself and that site for a year The lady would not market herself on MY site...the point is to use my site to work out bugs, take the site for a spin, secure her own domain name and host, and take the files to that site. She has up to a year to do that. , bring traffic, paid advertising and then left without a site after that year The year is not mandatory...I offer up to a year for testing. The intent is not to host for anyone...again, I am not in the hosting or domain name selling business. , well then I got to ask - how much help was that to her? Hmmm, free website build by a guy who does this for a living, a year of free hosting to get organized, and ownership of all content and templates on completion. I'd say that's a pretty substantial help.

I guess since you have some candidates these questions really don't need to be answered but it may help others getting freebee service in the future.
Glad to answer any other questions. I'll be offering more free services in the future, so stay tuned.
