I would just join pokerstars.net, they have free playing and pay playing. You will get a good feel for the idiots you will play at the free tables but unfortunately they are at the pay tables as well. I have been playing at the pay tables now for about 6 months and I'm up about about 200% from my initial investment. The only advice you need is play your hand, don't get sucked in and don't get emotional / beat yourself up on a bad beat because it will cost you!

Thanks for the advice Cruzer, and I do play on-line, but prefer a forum where I could discuss hands and playing styles to better myself.

This is just for fun, but Frank has been trying to organize a poker party with the girls for some time. Mabye a poker game after main party on July 14th?
There once was a time that twoplustwo.com was a great poker site and had useful information. I posted on there from the very beginning. Still has great stuff, but it is so buried amidst the nonsense it essentially worthless to a learning player. I am Sredni Vashtar on twoplustwo, feel free to PM me there, I will can help. There are several coaching sites that are useful and have free trials. thas the way to go IMO. Deucescracked, Cardrunners, and Dragthebar are three.
Not sure what your objectives are, but get it out of your head that you will make huge money in poker. Barring luck, of course. I am excluding lucky tourny wins, which are awesome (I had one myself years ago, but it is not a reflection long term expectation. ) If your IQ is above average, 30 bucks an hour is easily acheivable (cash games), but making 150 an hour or more will require ability, skilll and dedication. (I am referring to online here, live is easier but since only playing one table it is not as inevitable.)
