Heard one commentator say that the Australian floods will benefit Canadian resource companies, especially TECK.

Australia is or was the world's biggest producer of met coal. This is one of Teck's main products. I looked as it was recovering but was too skittish.

I like Saskatchewanians. Real salt of the Earth. Gordie Howe was born and raised there. That province was bankrupt in 1993.
The first thing I could think of when it comes to Saskatchewan is Cameco, not Potash. :p

Just an observation - I haven't noticed that anybody offered help to Aussies for devastation. And they were always there to help others when needed. Very sad.
It is a sad reflection of our world to-day. I remember Australia offering aid to the tsunami victims and Pakistani flood victims.

Don't recall the Aussies ask for help. Maybe the majority of the devastated areas in Queensland are sparsely populated.

The Muslims countries in the Middle East are not known to offer aid to any disasters.

Besides their farcical responses to help the Pakistani, they as a group were simply MIA in 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami when Indonesia, the largest Muslim country took the biggest hit and was devastated.

Except Pakistan, Malaysia and Brunei, those in the ME pretended nothing happen until the "Great Satan" mobilized and organized the allies/neighbors to send the humanitarian aid and soon somebody started to ask where's other "Muslim brothers".

Only then those ME "brothers" began to donate cash amount like chicken feed and unlike the Israelis, to whom many IDF doctors, body identifiers from ZAKA and the police are deployed to assist the humanitarian mission, those ME "brothers" remained MIA on the ground.

So much for the "Muslim Solidarity".

Worst natural disaster in the history of Australia (well since the arrival of the White Man). Worst than the forest fires of a few years ago.

Again you have to ask the Aussie why they haven't asked others for help. ;)

BTW, not going to be surprised the casualties and devastation are not even close to Katrina in 2005.

Too proud. Many of the original (White) Australians arrived on prison ships because they refused to live life under an unjust king.
Sounds like a "solid" case to sell short on the Aussie dollars, fixed income and bearish on their stock market.

Not going to be surprised Jim Chanos of the world is doing just that, an indirect play to sell short China, the alleged mother of all bubbles.

Too hard to sell short on the Loonie and put a hurt on fully valued TSX and fixed income since unlike the Aussie, the correlation between Loonie strength and China's growth is not obvious. ;)

In view of its enormous oil resources one would think of Saudi Arabia as
one rich nation with a lot of money to spare for its Muslim brothers in need. In truth
it is one of the most backward nation in the world. I believe half of its population are
illiterate. It is the princes and royalties of the house of Saud who are the
major beneficiaries of the oil riches. One must take into consideration that
Saudi is a people living under one of the most corrupted and repressive
regime in the world. One reason the crimes committed
by the House of Saud is seldom reported in the news is
probably that Saudi is one of the staunchest
ally of the U.S in the Muslim world. Can't expect a people living
in poverty and suffering from oppression to be charitable.

Any proof to back up your claim that half of the Saudis are illiterate?

Based on the "location" indicated in your handle, I am surprised you do not attach anything from Saudi Arabia to support your claim.

I would incline to trust your claim if you say the majority of the Saudi youths graduated with useless degrees, which result to lack of employable skills for the job market and thus creating frustration among the young and restless.

Maybe they are not that charitable, say compared to support Hamas is due to the fact that the Muslims in Indonesia are NOT ARABS.

BTW, in terms of the standard of living the Saudis are pretty much better off compared to their neighbors in Iraq, Egypt and Yemen.

Saudi Arabia and its neighbors in the Middle East have been undergoing a major
demographic transition towards a young population. I don't have any statistic data
handy but I would guess in the very near future youngsters (0--30?) would represent
as much as half of the population in Saudi Arabia (the current median age is around 26).
Probably similar change would apply to Iran. Since the younger generation stand a better
chance to have received an education the 50% illiteracy perhaps no longer hold true. But
I believe this is indeed what it was until the 90s.

Saudi surely has a better living standard than the Iraqii. But I believe much of the population
are feeding on the scraps falling off the tables of the royalties rather than earning their income
by doing anything productive.

Without any hard data I can refer to I should revise what I've said about the Saudi
illiteracy rate. In all likelihood the illiteracy was greater than 50% at one point in the
early 80s. Given the rapid demographic shift to a median age as low as 25 the
current illiteracy rate must be significantly smaller. My apology for the rather inaccurate
info from my earlier post.

Notwithstanding the improvement in its literacy rate Saudi remains a backward
nation ruled by world class thugs on the same league of Saddam Hussein.
