My ancient PS-2 is about to be retired. I have no brand loyalty to Sony or anybody else so if a replacement isn't a Sony I don't really care.

I don't actually play much but would like to update my gear. I already have a Blu-Ray DVD player so I don't need another one built into the gaming platform.

Most of my games are first-person shooter and racing cars, motorcycles.

So which gaming platform do you think is best and why?

I prefer PS3.

Free online, blu-ray player, easy to upgrade the HD and my launch model still haven't died. Compared to my Xbox 360 which had 3 RROD death failures.

I don't own a game platform, but since PS3 includes a Blue-Ray player, I probably will buy that after Xmas. My nephew says that it is better suited for an HD TV so that works for me. Also, I'm told it is more of an adult's game system. Thanks for any help.

I like the xbox kinect over the ps3 version. Of course the kinect has the downside of actually having to move to play instead of lying on a sofa waving a wand.

PS3 all the way, great blurry and dvd player, great games, bluetooth controllers, free online multiplayer - no red ring of death... not even close really.

Almost exactly my response! The only diference is that I gave up after one RROD and I didn't get my PS3 at launch. However, I do have the originsal 60GB version with backwards capability. These are exactly the reasons to chose PS3.

I would choose PS3 simply to avoid the RROD (this is supposed to be less of an issue now for Xbox though).

I use the PS3 as a Bluray player and for online gaming. Over the lifespan of my unit I figured I saved a fair bit of money compared to the alternatives.

I personally have a PS3, for various reasons including those already mentioned by others here.

If you are not partial to game franchises that are exclusive to a particular platform (example Halo, etc), then the PS3 is the way to go. Under the hood, I believe it has the more powerful hardware and if a game is being developed for all the platforms, it will be better on the PS3.

If I were to consider the xbox, it would be because of the recently released Kinect, which takes the wii & move's motion features to the next level. Time will tell, need to wait until more titles come out to see if it lives up to its potential.

quick update

Well, based on the results of the poll here and other input (friends who own these things) I decided that a PS3 would probably be my best bet.

I went to my local Future Shop and the sales guy pretty much talked me out of it. Not in preference to another platform, but to any system at all. He talked so much about how about 1 in 3 PS3 overheats (apparently this is a problem) and that if I were to buy one I should get the extended warranty.

I know what he's trying to do because I know that there's HUGE margin in extended warranties, but if he's correct about the PS3 platform overheating then I'd best put that budget money to different use. Looks like I'm getting a second motorcycle helmet this spring!

Why buy a console when you can play much better games on a PC. Granted you'll have to pay more for the hardware but then again quality does not come cheap and there is much more you can do with a pc than play games. As for software, get a steam account and never go to a store again!

PS3 would be the best choice in terms of of getting more bang for your buck, but the downside to the PS3 compared to the XBOX is that with the PS3 most of the good players that you play online with are from Japan, Germany, UK, etc... and this causes a 1 to 2 second lag with online playing, which equals "you loose more battles". There is few players from North America in the PS3, but they're mostly shitty gamers that you don't wanna play with because most of them suck, and you will likely be doomed to loose most of your battles. With the XBOX however, all the good players from North America USA and Canada have it and when you play with them there is no lag whatsoever, because they're close to you, so when you play with them on online battles, races, fights etc... you will definitely win a lot of battles, and rack up some big points.
