It looks like ManuLife is slowly coming back from the dead. The CEO said that once they get beyond this temporary period of unpleasantness, shareholders can look forward to core earnings north of $2 billion annually.

Maybe, just maybe. We'll see after their Investor Day tomorrow and tax loss selling before the end of 2010.

BTW, I am counting Manulife is going to face another round of duress from troubles brewing on long term health care insurance underwritten in the states, while their business in Asia is facing cutthroat competition from AIA, Prudential PLC, China Life and Ping An Insurance.

Let's see not if, but when Manulife is going to be take over target. Perhaps from another dud like CIBC.

Wasn't ManuLife prepared to take over CIBC a few years ago?
Dominic D'alessandro was then Manulife CEO. He's the same f*cker who wrecked Manulife balance sheet before he retired in 2009 and joined CIBC board.

BTW, Don Guloien, the current CEO was Dominic no. 2 and he's no way innocent when it comes to the hedging or lack of hedging on VA disaster.

Yep, massive short covering.

Plus the higher yield for 10 years treasury in the states does help somewhat.

Having said that, MFC volatility or beta nowadays has everything to do with stock market direction instead of the company fundamentals.

Not going to be surprised again when Manulife drops another shoes, say disclosing significant exposure on the Muni bonds at John Hancock subsidiary, another round on writedown on their long-term care insurance and their market share in Asia shrinks due to competition from PRU, AIA, even HSBC or China Life.

As always, you should ask a qualified adviser before making any decision.

Maybe duang or John LaRue could give you better advice. :p

Personally, I find POW/PWF less volatile but you have to do your homework to figure out.
