I think Bratina is going to make Hamilton Hobbying Miserable. We do recall a while back "Pink Planet" (RIP planet) was being villainized for being near a park. Pink P. more or less closed because of the un-needed press. Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't it Bratina that stuck the knife in them!?

Read for yourself

I hear Councillor Bob Bratina used to his radio show this morning to comment on my Saturday story about his idea to move body rub parlours out of neighbourhoods. Apparently he takes issue with the headline and notes I took a comment from a private email. The email was cc'd to fellow councillors, staff and police.

Here's his email below, so you can judge for yourself. He starts by mentioning a community newsletter from a citizen in Ottawa that was attached at the bottom.

Hi Marty (Hazell, acting manager of licensing),
This letter comes from a community activist in Ottawa who visited me here a few weeks ago to look at solving our common problems. I've forwarded this to hopefully work toward an effective way of dealing with body-rubs. Obviously it's a problem everywhere. We're allowed three licences , yet there are many more masquerading as aromatherapy, etc. The real problem is knowing that illegal acts are taking place and not being able to enforce. In the case of the Pink Planet, Glyn Wide quickly and easily secured charges against an attendant through an undercover operation. The attendant left town, the management claims ignorance, stating "we warn our staff not to do this" and the beat goes on. (so to speak). In the case of the Pink Planet it is next door to families with children, across the street from a park and a block away from a school. It is a place where men go to obtain sexual relief, and where attendants may be under the control of pimps. I would rather have a designated "red light" district than this kind of continuing farce, especially in family-oriented neighbourhood locations. Can we create a by-law that would accomplish this? If you could, please open the attached letter for comment.
Thanks.
Bob Bratina.

with that in mind... what are Hamilton Hobbyist's view of things

The problem with Pink Planet was that it was a block away from his home. Once it disappeared, he said much less about the MPs. Note also that his solution isn't a blanket ban, but to consider a red-light district.
I agree that Bratina is problematic on this, as well as on other issues of who has a right to be in the city (e.g. getting rid of "difficult looking people", as if looking difficult is a crime), but I don't see him spearheading a crackdown short of there being an explosion of new rub'n'tugs starting up. Show World might be a more likely target for him as part of the Gore park redevelopment.
For those who are more SP oriented, Bratina can't really do anything.

"Show World might be a more likely target for him as part of the Gore park redevelopment."

The private booths are going to be removed from Show World shortly. The issue is that the police are technically prohibited from entering the booths because they're private property (since the occupier is renting it for his own use). Through pressure, the police deparment has coerced the owners into removing them. Personally, I have never been to show world, but sadly, it was one of the few businesses that did well in downtown hamilton! So I'll be disappointed to see it go.

Regarding Bobby, I can't imagine him making our lifestyles anymore difficult than they already are. To be honest, I've always supported the idea of a Red Light district. It would keep the business localized (because, let's face it, alot of people don't want that in their back yards) and it would encourage tourism. I mean, does any one really think hamilton is "the waterfall capital of the world"? No. So we might as well give it something that brings home the bacon!

What everyone should be worried about is when CL shuts down their erotic area in Canada ! What will everyone do ? CL is the only place where many many many girls use to advertise themselves.. And think about it 90 % of all girls reviewed in the Hamilton section of Terb are off CL

I wrote Laurel Broten to protest, and should be receiving her reply in the mail shortly. Maybe the rest of you should do the same. The McGuinty government is a bit gunshy at the moment, so if they think that the obvious homerun of shutting down CL in the name of protecting women will push some voters to look at other options, they may back off a little. Especially if the argument is "enough government", since they are a bit spooked by Rob Ford at the moment.

How do you figure? CL fucking blows man! Too many BS and B&S ads. RedZone will become the standard, same with this board. CL shutting down might actually be a blessing!

The reason why the operations are in residential neighbourhoods is that they are not legal anywhere.

The moment the city authorizes them in industrial districts, at least the more up-scale places will move. However, don't expect Hamilton to authorize anything anywhere.

Just had a conversation about someone as to why businesses don't locate in Hamilton. Legitimate businesses can't get the required approvals from city hall!

While I will defer to the lawyers on this board, I think it is safe to say that the government has a fairly tenuous case against CL, in Canada in particular given the legal framework around prostitution. CL may yet cave, though, because they don't want bad publicity. But other, smaller, operations offering a similar listing service might be less likely to bow to pressure. JMHO.
