I try to play every week, not sure if there is any specific strategy that we should follow. I like to call straight-up wins on a few close games and box the ones with the higher spreads. On any given Sunday...

I follow a similar strategy as well. In the past I have won with mainly favourites and the pay off is low ($100-$200), hence the change in strategy.

For the past couple of years in mid season there is one of those weeks where the majority of the dogs win outright - Usually some lucky person who knows squat about football wins.

There are quite a few close games for opening week - At first glance I would probably box the Oak/Tenn, SD/KC and/or the Car/NYG games.

For those who do not use other sources of fototball gambling, from the point spread point of view, there appear to be some ok plays:

* Oak +7 - Lot of points
* Pit + 1.5 - The Falcons are a good team, but Pit at home with their defense...Some games Big Ben won by handing the ball off
* Car +7 - Lot of points
* Indy -2.5 - Indy will have a strong opening game
* Bears -6.5 - They are playing the Lions
* SF -4.5 - SF will be ready from the opening kick off

Others I will have to research some more...

* Buf +3.5 - Half decent rivalry and Buf is a home dog
* Phi +4.5 - Phi is a home dog - Is GB that good?
* Rams +3.5 - Ari has lost quite a bit of offense from last season and they were average on defense

Flip a coin:

* Ravens/Jets - Both strong defensively, but I like the Ravens offense more
* Browns/Bucs - The toilet bowl - Whichever team makes the least mistakes wins
* Cincy/NE - Too tough for me to call
* Dal/WSH - Logic says the Boys, but this rivalry has been unpredictable regardless of the talent level
* Den/Jags - A slight upgrade from the Browns/Bucs game...

I agree with INDY. Peyton had over 400 yards and still ended up with the loss. Ain't going to happen again!

How did you guys do in the Pool? I got a couple of games wrong and missed out on the sweet prize of $100K for each winner LOL

Some solid dogs won outright (Kansas City, Washington and Seattle) and some of the smaller ones also prevailed (Pittsburgh and Baltimore). Goes to show you any given Sunday...

Week # 2 - Can't get worse than the first week...

Sometimes the odds for week # 2 are slightly biased due to week one results. Teams adjust, bounce back or just get that first game out of the way.

Off the bat I like:

* Pitts + 6.5 against the Titans. Pitts D is tough and they should keep it close if not win it outright.
* Oak -4.5 against the Rams. I think the Raiders will have a strong effort at home
* Car -3.5 against the Bucs. Same as the Raiders, look for a strong effort on home field

Leaning towards...but still thinking...

* Vikings -7.5 at home vs the Fins. I like Minny's D and a bounce back effort at home
* Wash +3.5 at home vs the Texans. Wash was a dog at home against the Boy's and won outright. Hou was geared fro Indy last week and the skins may be a let down
* SF +6.5 at home vs the Saints. I can imagine that Singletary must have read the riot act after that embarassment in Seattle. Plus it is a national game...
* NYG +5.5 at Indy. Battle of the Mannings. Houston exposed a possible weakness in Indy's run D.
* Phi -6.5 at the Lions. I like what Vick brings to the offense.

Games tough to call....

* GB -14.5: Plus 2 TD's is a lot to cover, but it is the Bills who are the opponent
* Balt -2.5 at Cincy: Will the Bengals bounce back?
* Dal +9.5 at home vs. the Bears: Both teams had poor opening efforts, but the Boy's may want to show the home fans they are ready
* NE -3.5 at the Jets: Can the Jets D hold Brady off the scoresheet? Can the Jets actually score?
* Clv +1.5 at home vs. the Chiefs: Was KC's Monday night efforts a fluke? The Browns only have a couple of games they may be able to win this year, last week was one and this is another.

Flip a coin games...

* Atl -7.5 at home to the Cards
* Den -3.5 at home to the Seahawks
* SD -7.5 at home to the Jags

Ughh Proline - Point Spread odds are usually off from other lines in Vegas or online. Vikings and Falcons are set at like -5.5 and -6.5 respectively, to lay more than 7.5 is like saying they will win by 10. Same with Green Bay is -13 and Titans -5. If the lines are too high (like in this case) better to stick with dogs. Especially when a 3-game parlay pays 4-1 on Proline versus 5.9-1 to 6-1 elsewhere. You should be looking for teams to bounce back at home after a road loss last week. If they are a dog or a favourite like Atlanta, Indy, Sandy and Cincy. Cincy / Bal is a tough game due to it being a divisional game, maybe leave it alone at Bal -2.5. Take it for what its worth Ref. Heh, good luck.

Hey Bishop, good points as noted above - thanks!

I wonder why proline has odds that differ (sometimes a fair bit, especially crossing a number like 6.5 to 7.5) from the odds established by Vegas and other so called pros? Does proline look at local betting trends?

I enjoy listening to "Inside the Line" on the Fan on Sunday. Even though the guys are as consistent as I am in calling a winner, they do provide some interesting info like proline value, gameday weather conditions, etc.

Maybe I'll invest some time in understanding the rules per online/offshore betting....

Heh, well they (OLG - Proline) swing the line a little bit because they know they are thieves. They know their payout scale is dreadful so they'll perhaps put the line at an odd looking number -to throw you a bone- like to -7.5 when it should be -5.5. This is in regard to 'Pointspread' only, I don't bother with regular 'Proline'. OLG employees setting the line aren't oddsmakers so they get the vegas lines etc... and touch them up a bit. Personally, I don't listen to that radio show or put too much weight on what T.V. or radio tells me about forecasting a prediction. Standard sportsbooks return your wager plus your gain upon a winner (in this case parlay), unlike Proline you only collect the prize money, most people over look that. No offense, Proline is not the way to go to win but most people (victims) have no other means of wagering sports via booky or online betting houses. If OLG was serious about offering a fair shake they would open a Sportsbook at Woodbine casino.

Maybe this is too much of generalization but public (i.e. those who play PL pointspread) loves chalk (favorites) so OLG "usually" adds a point or two to the favorites (sometimes knocking them off a key number -- e.g. GB is 13 in Vegas/online but 14.5 on PL).
As for this week, I'd be wary of the NY-NE game. It screams TRAP. NY looked like shit on national TV and of course NE is public's team so when they win everybody is on their bandwagon. It'll probably come down to a FG but I can't say which way. NY's D is still good and NE's D is not on par with Baltimore's D so NY's pathetic O should get a few points and kill clock. Also, I don't like the Viks -- Favre looks like an old man and if he's ineffective then Dolphins can stack the line and try and stop AD. Hmmm. Too many games to play -- that's usually why I don't do so well. I don't have discipline. But at least I know that I should stay away from PL. But GL to you.
BTW can I put $$$ on Dallas +9.5?!?! Please. LOL.

I used to enjoy listening to those hacks (Inside the Line on a am radio) every Sunday morning but have boycotted that radio station......it's more talk radio now with very little actual content that directly relates to the games.

I will never share my full list of picks because I am the king of having (1) pick incorrect (it has happened to me 10 times over the past (3) years. The one that hurt the most was (2) years ago when I missed out on the largest pool in propicks history.

The Bears screwed me for a perfect ticket - I LOST WITH (1) second left on the clock. Take a look @ the clip to feel my pain......this by far was the worst!!

WEEK 2:

There are a number of trap games on the board.....be carefull and do your research...just because a team has to or needs to win usually means they don't - too much presure = choke! A few "good teams" will definately be 0-2 after week 2!

Do yourself a favour and get the NFL network channel 422.

The games that have me the most preplexed are:

CHI vs DAL
HOU vs WSH
MIA vs MIN
JAX vs SD

I really think (1) or more of the favourites will lose straight up.

Chances are there could have been numerous other people in the same boat as you and the prize package would have been split.

Still, it's a bitter pill to swallow. I lost a perfect ticket on an OT game.

I checked out some of the on line betting sites and correct me if I am wrong, but the parlay is similar to pro-line except the odds are better. They do offer one game straight up.

Also, for anyone experienced, do you set up an account by depositing funds via a credit card into a user account? When you want to take your money back is it a simple transfer to your credit card? Do they charge handling or wire fees?

I don't use my credit card to fund my accounts anymore. I use INSTADEBIT. It's a free service which sets up a link between your bank account and your sportsbook account. The transfer to fund your sportsbook account is free and the sportbook will usually allow you 1 free withdrawal back to your bank account per month. I use it for sports interaction (Canadian sportsbook -- has good lines if you like the underdog) and thegreek (Vegas lines and I've never had a problem with them).

I use pinnaclesports.com, Canadian credit card companies like visa and mastercard aren't accepted as far as i know for the following reason: they don't let you sign-up to "gambling sites" -pricks. So, you can use 'Instadebit' (middleman) and link up your bank acc # to transfer funds back and forth. The odds on these sites are better for odds on games and payouts. Strait-up one game the juice can be like -104, lower than the traditional -110 what you would find in Vegas sports books. With Pinnaclesports.com they give you one free withdrawl each calender month anymore than that they charge like $18 i think. That's the site i use which is based off the Venezuelan coast.

Week 2 was tough. I believe there was 14 winners for Pro Picks Pools with 15/16...you don't often see a non-perfect ticket taking home the prize but it did this week. Quite a few number of upsets and games that caught people off-guard.

Just a ?: Do you guys play Pools on your own or do you join other players and split the cost of boxing games to make it more financially manageable? For 16 and 15-games cards, it's always a challenge, i guess you have to plan for the worst and hope for the best.

2 folks nailed the Pools last week, 1 lady in Oshawa and 1 gent from Georgetown. I heard the lady only put $5 down and didn't box any game. Wondering if she chose the teams based on a certain pattern?

Or maybe she's a front for a *consortium* boxing games up the yin-yang? It's a crazy world out there, let me tell ya
