Corporate America is holding one trillion dollars in cash. What will they do with all this cash? Takeovers? Stock buybacks? Increased dividends?

Too much fear prevails in the market place these days. One day blue skies, the next it gloom and doom. IMO corporate america is waiting for some level of direction either way good or bad before they deploy the cash. Hard to take a stance when you don't know what's going to happen next. In the stocks that i follow i have seen 1. dividend increases to reassure stockholders of stability, 2. M&A since there are bargains out there, 3. buybacks since their own stock is undervalued. lol, I have seen some companies that have issued commercial paper with the express use of buying back their stock own even though they already have cash (i am assuming their logic is the interest rate is worth the potential capital gains on their severely discounted stock prices)

I was watching BNN last week when they had some bankster on.
He said that the corporate interests have $3 trillion dollars on their books.
What some of them are doing is M&A, empire building! eg. Potash Corp.
And there will be "synergies", meaning more layoffs.

Wow! 3 trillion dollars! Some guy on BNN said that Microsoft or Google could buy RIM "lock, stock and barrel" with their pocket change.

Yeah but how much debt is the important question in the ratio between cash and debt.

Microsoft and Apple have something like $40-$50 billion in cash - each. Google is running a close third. I doubt that any of them are holding significant debt.
