Conrad Black granted bail

Conrad Black has won release on bail while an appeal court reviews his conviction for fraud.

It’s not clear when Lord Black might be released. His lawyer, Miguel Estrada, said Chicago judge Amy St. Eve, who presided over the criminal trial, will have to set the terms of the bail.

The ruling on bail bodes well for Lord Black’s appeal of his conviction. In order to win bail, Lord Black’s lawyers had to establish for the court that his appeal raised “a substantial question of law.” Lord Black has lost previous attempts to win bail, including once before the same appeal court.

“Yes, I am pleased of course,” Mr. Estrada said Monday after the ruling.

The bail decision is one of the few legal victories Lord Black has been able to claim since 2003 when he was forced out as chief executive officer of his U.S.-based media conglomerate Hollinger International after an internal investigation revealed unauthorized payments to him and three other senior executives.

Since the ouster he was, in his own words, “excoriated” by a Delaware Court judge in 2004 for improperly attempting to sell the company's flagship British newspaper, The Telegraph. After a lengthy Chicago trial, he and three other Hollinger executives were convicted of fraud in 2007 for misappropriating $6.1-million and Lord Black was additionally convicted of obstruction of justice for removing boxes of documents from his Toronto office in defiance of a Canadian court ruling. Lord Black began serving his six-and-a-half-year sentence in a Florida prison in March, 2008 and his initial attempts to appeal the trial decision were denied until last month's decision by the U.S. Supreme Court overturned one of his convictions.

The Supreme Court ruling is only one of several legal battles that continue to entangle Lord Black. He faces a variety of civil actions from creditors and investors and he has law suits outstanding against some of his early accusers including Richard Breedan, former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Last week the U.S. Internal Revenue Service added to his woes by slapping him with a $70-million (U.S.) tax bill which they alleged he owed for failing to pay taxes on more than $116-million in income he received between 1998 and 2003.

Good I am glad he got bail. I like Conrad Black.

Dont know why the public always seems to hate people that are either wealthy or famous. I guess they just like seeing people fall.

People seem to have forgotten why he is in jail in the first place...and you shouldn't attritbute wealth to success. Anyway we all know if you have enough money you can get away with murder on this planet...especially if you're rich, old and white.

Finally, Conrad Black (Inmate No. 18330-4240) will soon be seeing the light of day.

The only reason he is out is because the BAIL review is on the fraud charges.....NOT THE OBSTRUCT CHARGES.

But given that...if the Obstruct charges ARE ALL the offences he ends up facing, then it is felt he has done the sentence for the Obstruct and should be released. The Judge agreed.

SO LETS NOT FORGET..HE IS A CONVICT, WHO SERVED A SENTENCE FOR, at least Obstruct, and is now out.

People should never forget that he raped and pillaged HOLLINGER to the tune of $440million. He prospered, the Hollinger shareholders got "Greeked".

Lord Black is a classic example of "unfulfilled promise". He inherited over $8 from his father. He took over Argus Corp at age 34. It is rumoured that his net worth now is less than his original inheritance.

Contrast Black with Ted Rogers who inherited $6million from his father and built a huge communications empire and pass over a billion dollars to the next generation of Rogers.

I don't like him either. But he got out because the USSC accepted his lawyer's argument that some of his charges were unconsitutional under the "void for vagueness" argument. I don't think Black's connections matter fuck in the larger world of the US financial system.

What is wrong with this picture? Lord Black's partner in crime, David Radler pleaded guilty and agreed to a 29 month jail term. Now Lord Black is going to escape with no criminal record after what he did to Hollinger and the public shareholders?

Black renounced his Canadian citizenship so I hope Harper treats him like Kadr and keeps him out of the country.
Sort of a given. As a non citizen / non permanent resident who has been convicted of a felony, Lord Black no longer has the right to enter Canada. I guess he has to go back to his "home country", Great Britain now.
