I've heard the new OLG ad on the radio a few times. The OLG readily admits that approximately 3.5% of their customers are problem gamblers. The ad also goes on to say that they are constantly training their staff in how to detect these problem gamblers?

I guess this ad is a step in the right direction:confused: ?

It's an ad. Nothing more. They simply weigh the cost of this PR campaign against any lost business they may incur from bad publicity.

Don't kid yourself. They don't really give a shit about you, just your money.

Those 3.5% are their best customers. The last thing they actually want is for them to stop gambling.

Maybe it's like the health warnings they put on the front of cigarette packages.

As if those health warnings are going to stop the diehard smokers from getting their nicotine fix?

Maybe the OLG was pressured by the ontario government to create these new ads in the first place?

In thinking about it maybe my last statement doesn't make sense as isn't OLG in fact run by the ontario government?

It's run by the gov't alright. But just like everyone else, OLG's management personnel's job performance is based on some criteria. I'd say generally speaking, their performance is based on revenue generated. Not how many people they save from financial ruin.

I'm not a gambler myself. With that being said I wonder why the OLG bothers to run these ads in the first place?

Ironically I started hearing these ads on the fan590 right after the fan 590's pro line segment called tips from the tipster:) .

To create the warm and fuzzy illusion that they're trying to help problem gamblers. I'm sure that they've invested much more in catching cheaters than assisting the "3.5%" (probably a low estimate).

People can voluntarily exclude themselves from OLG casinos but OLG has no effective system for keeping them out.

I'm sure we'll never get the numbers (as they would be hard to track), but what percentage of the total spending do this 3.5% spend. I'd guess as high as 40-50%. I play the 6/49 at a rate of 6-18$ per week and I knew a guy that, almost daily, spent 50$ on proline picking long-shots. He cashed a couple of times, but I know the losses don't mitigate the wins.

IMHO with this bad economy I think 10% would be a more realistic number with regards to the percentage of problem gamblers out there. A lot of people with debt up to their eyeballs are desperate for the quick fix that gambling can provide.

As usual just my opinion!

Since there is no easy way to track how many lottery tickets
an individual player buys they have absolutely no control over
problem gambling. I don't think they care.

The only reasons for such ads is simple. When people start bitching about problem gambling, the OLG can say "we did everything we could to educate people. Know your limit, play within it."
