Local News - NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE

A well-known sports executive from St. Catharines is dead and a Pelham man is facing impaired driving charges as a result of a rollover in Niagara-on-the-Lake early Thursday, east of the canal's Homer Bridge.

Scott Northwood, 43, vice president of the junior B Falcons hockey club, was found underneath a sport-utility vehicle.

He died at the scene.

Northwood was a front-seat passenger in a 2003 Lincoln Navigator.

Niagara-on-the-Lake firefighters and paramedics responded to the single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Homer and Taylor roads just past 12:30 a.m.

Police said the Navigator was northbound on Homer Road when it left the roadway onto the west side shoulder and ditch area, then rolled several times before coming to rest on its wheels at the southwest corner of the intersection, police said.

The 45-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene.

The collision remains under investigation by the police collision reconstruction unit. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call investigators at 905-735-7811 ext. 5500.

Mark Zavitz is charged with impaired driving causing death and driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
