The liquor license application is $1,000 and you pay this whether or not your license is granted (no refund if they refuse you) and if the property has never been licensed before you also have to pay for the advertising the liquor board does so that the public is notified that there is a liquor license application pending and then the hearings as to whether anyone objects or not (this whole process can take in and around nine months to complete.) Then it is $450 for each subsequent three year renewal. They also need to have clear criminal background checks on all license holders and managers and there must be at least one manager on staff who has verifiable liquor license management experience (and yes they check)

However as dreamer has pointed out that is not where the expenses are incurred. You have to have your premises be inspected and passed by not only the liquor board but also the fire department, the health department, the zoning department, city licensing department and both PST and GST tax departments, each of whom have their own criteria that you need to fulfill in order to get approval. The liquor license is not granted until AFTER all the other departments have stamped it approved. Don't forget you'll also have to apply for merchant card status through your bank (if you don't take cards your venture is sunk from the get go) Then take into account any costs you will have for decorative renovations that you may have in mind as well as costs to bring washrooms etc to handicapped accessible status if they aren't already.

Hope that helps a bit in putting it in perspective.

Thanks for the help everyone
This place already was a bar, & still licenced but under the person who ran it last. The bar has been closed since Oct 2006.. Is there a way to take over their Liquor License ??

You can transfer a license, however I am not sure you can transfer a license of an establshment that has been closed for such a long period.

You'll have to check with the liquor board themselves on the status of the license. They may likely have closed because of infractions on their license and the license was suspended, or even revoked. If either is the case then you are in effect starting out as if the place had never been licensed at all (that's how the liquor board looks at it). If the license was valid when they closed then it depends on IF the landlord applied to transer the license to a "Landlords Distress" category. Only if they applied and were approved would the license still be transferable otherwise, once again it's a brand new application. And lastly, as Dartman already pointed out, if they owed backtaxes, you would be required to pay them all IN FULL (no payment arrangments possible, cash on the barrelhead only) including all arrears, interests and penalties to even be considered for a transfer. It doesn't seem fair that you have to pay the previous owners taxes and penalties, but that's the way the law is written and there is no getting around it. One other thing to remember if applying to transer an exisiting license is you also transfer the license history of charges and infractions etc. When and if you do get a charge down the road, you will be treated as a multiple offender and penalties will be much more severe than if it is a new license and your first infraction.

Big tax issues there... bars are the worst biz to get into now.
