Applicants with sex-work experience (street, dance, escort, massage or other) will be prioritized for this position.

Communications Coordinator and Media Outreach

•Qualified applicants must have familiarity with sex working communities, HIV education, prevention and outreach, and sex worker activism in Toronto, Ontario. Applicants will have a sensitivity to working with individuals from diverse racial, cultural and economic backgrounds. Some flexibility in scheduling to accommodate evening/weekend work is required.

•Qualified applicants must have proficiency with Microsoft Word, Email listserv programs, Adobe PageMaker and/or Adobe Illustrator, and basic website design and updating skills

•Qualified applicants will additionally have strong inter-personal skills, the ability to work under limited supervision, excellent organizational skills, be able to communicate verbally and in writing effectively, be comfortable working in a sex work positive, feminist, anti-racist, queer and trans positive environment, and be entrepreneurial, artistic, and outgoing. Applicant must also be able to formulate new publicity ideas and strategies. Applicants must be comfortable working both independently and in collaboration with another staff.

This is a 6-month contract position set to begin on May 1 2007. It will require a commitment of 10 hours a week at $22.00 per hour.

The Communications Coordinator and Media Outreach person is required to submit monthly written reports to the Maggie’s Board of Directors on the status of the publicity materials and media outreach.

This position will be evaluated roughly half way through the 6-months contract.

Responsibilities May Include:

Publicity and Promotional Responsibilities:
-The Communications Coordinator is responsible for preparing and mailing publicity and promotional packages and making follow-up phone calls.
- Act as the graphic designer and publicity contact.
- Research publication and advertising deadlines for local print media.
- Design posters, postcards, pamphlets and other promotional materials and coordinate printing and distribution.

Community Consultation:
-The Communications Coordinator will seek the advice and guidance of the Maggie’s board, staff, membership and other sex working communities in Toronto in the design of the Maggie’s logo.
-This project might also include broader discussions and survey of sex working communities in consultation with the Board of Directors.

Media Responsibilities:
- Update, expand and modify Maggie’s website.
- Ensuring that the website includes HIV/AIDS education materials.
- In conjunction with the board of directors and other staff, the Communications Coordinator will write and distribute all Maggie’s press releases and news bulletins and send community faxes.
- Responsible for coordinating public speaking tasks and interviews.
-The Communications Coordinator is expected to accurately reflect and interpret the Maggie’s mission statement and principles.
- Will create press package and distribute to the relevant outlets
- Be proactive in communication with local media personalities in challenging sex work stereotypes including sex work and HIV
