A US woman who won $1m (£536,000) in the New York state lottery four years ago has beaten the odds by winning another $1m lottery jackpot.
Valerie Wilson scooped her second $1m prize on a lottery scratch card.

Experts say that the chances of her winning both games were an incredible 1 in 3,669,120,000,000.

"The first time I couldn't believe it," the 56-year-old Long Island deli worker told the Newsday newspaper. "This time I said, 'God's on my side'."

Lottery officials say that in 2002 Ms Wilson beat odds of 1 in 5.2 million when she won the Cool Million scratch card game

Then last month she beat odds of 1 in 705,600 by winning New York lottery's Jubilee scratch card game.

According to New York state lottery officials, there have been two other double jackpot winners, who like Ms Wilson each won $1m prizes on two separate occasions.

"I lost my husband in 1993, so I went to the cemetery and thanked him," Ms Wilson told Newsday. "I figured he had something to do with it."

Ms Wilson says that the first time she won she used the money to help buy houses for her three children.

"This one is going to be for me," she said of the latest win. "I'm going to live a little bit."

Instead of getting a lump sum, Ms Wilson will get instalments of $50,000 a year for the next 20 years.

But despite her double victory Ms Wilson says she is not planning to quit her job in a local deli where she makes sandwiches and works on the till.

She is very lucky but I also think that with the money from her first win she can afford to buy more lottery tickets than the average person. It would not surprise me if she wins again.

Fred, Fred, Fred, what if she just bought a single lottery ticket?
Reasoning tells me, she's not an excessive spender on the lottery tickets to the point where she'll buy a lot of them in one shot.
Unlike the lottery tickets where you have to pick your own numbers.
These are scratch lottery cards.
If she was really hooked on gambling, the money she won 4 years ago would have been long gone. I suspect she's pretty good with her money, as she still works at the same place she's always worked - a deli.
Are there any sites for increasing scratch game odds buddy? ;)

Well, you said, "what if ?" My guess is she buys more tickets than most of us average folk. Working in a deli does not stop one from buying tickets particularly
if one can afford it. This woman is quite a gambler, imo.

She bought homes for her 3 children.
With that kind of money spent as is, over 4 years, there really wouldn't be much left of that 1million. So I don't think she bought a lot of tickets with her previous winnings like you think she might have.

We will never know for sure, scratch tickets are $1-$5 0r $10 a piece and you win some money along the way. Chances are she has won smaller amounts after her first big win.
Go talk to the lottery people on Bloor st ( moved ?) they will tell you that once
people win they usually see them again at their offices after.

@ home of course. Jeesh!
Experts say that the chances of her winning both games were an incredible 1 in 3,669,120,000,000.
Rosie says these experts need to go back to school.
There's a woman in Scarborough who's won the lottery 5 times!!
She won the Jackpot 3 times, and split the jackpot with another winner (different winner each time) 2 other times!!!
Believe that!
The only thing's, her husband keeps blowing the winnings on boozing, gambling, and massage parlours.

Winning is relative to the amount you spent. ..as for the odds being insurmontable see the numbers I posted in the post below. Someone running the numbers that were predicted in a 7 number combo would have got 5/6 and a bonus number ( $145,000). Considering that noone got 6/6 that would have been the top price. You don't have to do 21 million combinations to win as the experts say.

Of course you don't have to do 14 or 21 million combinations (6/49 or Super 7) to assure a win. Many combinations can be removed (ex 1,2,3,4,5,6 or 2,4,6,8,10,12 and or any "mathematical" combinations). Why?? Because as much as every combination is one in its own, the likelyhood of them appearing is probably so low, in a given week, that if you were to use the "I'm gonna play every line to guarentee a win" method you can reasonably discard these types of lines. THe only problem is....... "What if lightning happens to strike??"

BTW, I do think that the woman who won the jackpot twice probably plays more on tickets than the average person. Not to say that she has, or will, go broke playing the lottery, I just think that she does like to play, will continue to play (more than the average person), and can possibly win again.

must have been cheap homes or they live in a place where home prices are low! In the U.S., lottery winnings are taxed at a very high percentage (maybe 50%)! $500,000 might get you just one home in the GTA!

Well, she is a "56-year-old Long Island deli worker". Real Esate prices in Long Island, NY are usually quite high. http://envirovaluation.org/index.php?blog=7&m=200511 Probably higher than Toronto in general. So assuming she lives in Long Island, a $1Million prize will not buy her too many homes after taxes.

The good doc thinks Rosie is correct that these experts should go back to school to learn more. If the New York woman had never won anything before and then someone asks what are the odds of winning two $1 Million prizes for her, the chance would be 1 in 3,669,120,000,000.

However, analytically speaking, the two winning events can be looked at as totally independant episodes. So winning episode 1 four years ago with the odds of 1 in 5.2 million by the younger deli worker. As if she did not win her million before, then winning episode 2 last month with the odds of 1 in 705,600 by the now older deli worker.

In other words, they can be totally separate causal events. You might as well say that the deli worker 4 years ago is not the same deli worker 4 years now. Just like the good doc was a much more handsome guy 4 years ago and now the wrinkles are starting to show. LMAO!!! Looking at it this way, it does make beating the odds more tolerable. LOL!!!

Exactly, so her buying SO many extra lottery tickets because of her first prize winnings, isn't such a great theory anymore. =)

My neighbour swears that scratch tickets which end in odd serial numbers have better odds, can anyone confirm that ?
LOL!!! May be your neighbor was dealing with a stash of biased sample. The principle of randomness should apply to scratch tickets with regard to its overall population. No state lottery agencies want to be accused of rigging scratch games.

Or that could happen if the computer programmer who prepared that batch of scratch ticket numbers had a hangover and was not paying too much attention ?
