I was entering a search term on e-bay this afternoon, and to my horror discovered that when I started typing, the drop-down window showed search terms I had used on terb!!! I then went through several initial letters, starting with "a" and going to about "f" and found that the window was picking up every search term I had used on terb starting with the respective letters.

As I am single, I don't have to worry about a S/O, but I still didn't feel comfortable about it. So I was wondering if anyone could help out with the following questions:

1) How do I erase all previously used search terms from any drop down windows?

2) How do I prevent this from happening again?

3) What is the best software for maximizing privacy (i.e., "covering your tracks" by eliminating your browsing history, deleting search terms, deleting photos viewed, etc.), and does this software affect access to cached pages and thereby viewing speed?

Many thanks all.

Thats the IE history file.

If you set it to zero it will not remember where you've been. But the cokkie thats placed is still there.

Previously you could highlight a drop down selection and hit shift del and it would go away..newer versions won't allow that.

Other's may know of a work around

The history file stores websites you've gone to, not things you type into forms.

You want to go to Tools, Options and Content. There is a section there for "Auto Complete" that you want to clear and turn off.

Even more incideous...

Microsoft Windows logs a lot more user history than you would think: "This includes internet addresses visited, local files accessed, email addresses, and so on" and saves them in the registry. Little wonder why it grows and grows.

A good article on this and a tool to disable this "feature" can be found at
