Hey guys,

I'm trying to setup a wireless router for a friend, and after i think ive got it all connected, I get the message on the laptop saying I have "limited connectivity" The signal strength is at full - but I just can't connect to the internet.

Anyone know what the solution is?

Thanks

I an no expert

Just went through set up last week to block those who steal my signal...best thing to do is call customer support... you will be on hold 45 minutes to one hour but they can solve your problem in 30 seconds. You may be logging on to another network in the area by accident instead of your preferred wireless network

I'm no expert either - lol

Usually, they are plug-and-play if you are using XP.

One little tip - make sure you reset your modem AFTER connecting it to the router or your modem will get confused and you won't be able to connect.

Try running the Linksys CD to set it up. You'll have to hard wire it to the router first till it's setup then go to wireless.
If you don't have the CD you can download the program from www.linksys.com

Hi drd,

Quick list of items to check:

1. Are you connected the right wireless router. Did you explicitly select the router/network that you setup?

2. Is your PC/laptop set to use DHCP? If you didn't set this on the PC it is by default DHCP on most installations. It means that machine IP is dynamic and will be assigned by the 'network'. You set 'DHCP' on your PC by going into the network properties and making sure that there is no IP typed in...note that if there is a setting you aren't clearing their corporate settings.

3. You need to check if your router is setup properly. Did you connect via wire to configure the router? Is it issuing DHCP (usu. default) and is security enabled? You may need to setup your PC/laptop with the proper security settings to match the router settings.

4. If you can connect to the router via wireless (or wire) then you'll need to check the settings on the router relating to the WAN settings...connection between the internet access and the router.

It can get sort of difficult to diagnose although usually it is easy to fix. Good luck.

Not sure of the model you are using, but I've found with a couple of other Wireless setups that in the fine print you'll eventually discover NOT to use the Linksys or other software for trying to connnect from the laptop. Just use XP and let it find your available signals and then you can select which on you want, enter you security info and it should look for that signal all the time.

Good luck!

For my DSL connection, I don't use the software that came with it but just use the Windows internet connection to connect. I always have a limited connectivity icon on the taskbar (beside a second internet connected icon) that I can never get rid of, but I don't care cuz my internet connection still works.
