Sigh. How much more computer abuse can a guy take? First my X-mas debacle, then my hard drive overheats, and now I can't install WinXP Pro anymore.

I bought a shiny new hard drive and installed it, loaded up WinXP Pro, got an internet connection, then went for a Windows Update. Big mistake.

Next thing I know I'm getting a "Windows Genuine Validation" message saying I'm using an unvalidated version of WinXP (yeah, so?). Then it won't let me continue with any updates.

So am I screwed? I installed WinXP at X-mas using the same copy but now it doesn't work. Is there another way to get updates? Any advice out there?

As a fallback option (which I'd rather not have to take), I have a Windows XP Home Edition reinstallation CD that came with my old Dell laptop. Can I use that on my PC? Or will it somehow recognize I'm not on the Dell laptop?

not sure about ways to bypass the updates though I remember reading something so the information is out there.

The home edition cd can still be used on a different machine(might need a phone call to India to validate it). I'm not sure if that validation will work for xp pro.

This free website allows users of Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3, Netscape 4.0, Mozilla Firebird 0.7, Opera 5, or K-Meleon 0.9 to keep their copy of Windows up-to-date. Newer releases of these browsers are also suitable.

To use this site, you'll need to install the free plugin.

Established in Jan 2005, there has been sufficient opportunity for the plugin to be added to the database of your favorite antivirus or adware scanner (if it was dangerous) -- so make sure your definitions are up-to-date before continuing.

Why use WindizUpdate?

Not only will it keep you up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft, it will also keep software and drivers from other vendors updated. However, that functionality is currently missing.

If your using the Devil's Own Corp edition you will need the Windows Genuine Validation crack. OEM versions such as the cd that came with your Dell wont activate on anything else, Microsoft keeps vary close tabs on these versions unlike the retail versions where they seem to look the other way when installed on multiple pc's

The "yeah, so" is becuase MS want's its money.

As far as what to do, it's kind of tricky. MS releses new versions of it's WGA validator every few weeks. If you want to get all the updates, you'll have keep up with the latest cracks released for WGA. It's not simply getting new codes as they are black listed pretty quickly.

Anyway, you can still use windows update without a genuine copy but you won't get all the updates and you won't get Windows Defender.

I'll relate a story of mine. The hard drive in the laptop I used for school completely crashed on me last summer and Toshiba replaced it (since it was under warranty). They neglected to partition the drive for me, and I made the dumb mistake of not creating backup discs. My XP code would not work when I used another version of XP, so I grabbed one off the net. Worked fine until WGA kicked in.

I couldn't use the code that was provided to me with my laptop because it's specific to the OEM version of Windows that I had (this gem of information was given to me by M$ after fighting with them on the phone for 30 minutes), so if I tried another copy of XP it wouldn't accept it. So, I had to go back to the place I bought the laptop from and get the backup discs, reformat the hard drive and then all was good.

If Windows came preinstalled, see if you can go back to the manufacturer and get recovery discs. That should allow you to have a legit version of Windows, and get all of the updates without having to do it through other methods

I went and bought a new legit version so that problem is solved. But now I've got other troubles. :(
